Per Theater Chart: Carol's Second Verse is the Same as the First

December 1, 2015

Carol

Carol remained in first place on the per theater chart with an average of $49,443 in four theaters. This is 22% lower than the film's opening weekend average, which isn't bad for a limited release. The Danish Girl opened in a close second place with $46,830, also in four theaters. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 earned first place on the overall chart and third place on the per theater chart with an average of $12,456. Janis: Little Girl Blue earned an average of $10,931 in two theaters, which is great for a documentary. The second wide release in the $10,000 club was The Good Dinosaur with an average of $10,444.

We only have numbers from one other new limited release, Tamasha, which earned an average of $5,620 in 179 theaters. This is very good for a Bollywood release.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Trumbo topped $1 million just before the weekend and it expanded over the weekend reaching $2 million. On the downside, its per theater average is low enough that I don't think it will expand significantly beyond this point.
  • Room hit $3 million just before the weekend and should have no trouble getting to $4 million rather quickly. Where it goes from there depends on how well it does during Awards Season. It should pick up at least one Oscar nod, while three or four isn't out of the question.
  • As expected, Suffragette got to $4 million over the weekend. However, unless it starts picking up major Award Season nominations, it might not get to $5 million.
  • Prem Ratan Dhan Payo made it to $4 million, but that's as far as it will go.
  • Brooklyn expanded dramatically on Wednesday and that helped it get to $3 million before the weekend and $4 million and $5 million during the weekend. It will top $10 million and will likely do so this weekend. Additionally, its per theater average is still big enough to warrant further expansion.
  • As expected, Spotlight got all the way to $10 million over the weekend. In fact, it is now ahead of The Gunman and just behind Self/Less.
