Blu-ray Sales: Batman vs. Holdovers

May 15, 2015

It was a bad week on the home market and none of the new releases sold more than 100,000 units on the Blu-ray sales chart. This includes the new number one release, Batman vs. Robin, which only sold 80,000 units / $1.34 million. This is much better than it performed on DVD and its opening week Blu-ray share was 65%.

Interstellar was pushed into second place with 53,000 units / $1.20 million for the week and 878,000 units / $17.59 million after three. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies was very close behind with 51,000 units / $1.41 million for the week and 1.16 million units / $32.56 million after nearly a month of release. The Babadook opened in fourth place with 26,000 units / $393,000 for an opening week Blu-ray share of 41%. That's a little weaker than I would have liked, but for a low-budget horror film, it is hardly bad. Game of Thrones: Season One was in a virtual tie for fourth place with 26,000 units / $2.53 million over the week for a three-year total of 705,000 units / $42.00 million.

Next up is The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death, which opened in eighth place with 19,000 units / $385,000 for an opening week Blu-ray share of just 26%. This is terrible for a first-run release. Big Eyes opened in 12th place with 17,000 units / $332,000 for an opening week Blu-ray share of just 25%. The film didn't open truly wide, but even so this is weak. It is a drama and it did perform better on DVD, but this is still not good. The Man with the Iron Fists 2 was right behind in 13th place with 16,000 units / $330,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 36%, which is fine for this type of release.
