Limited Release: Going Wild
February 20, 2015
It is Oscar weekend, so it should come as no real surprise that there are not a lot of films opening in limited release this week. After all, the target audience for these films is paying a lot more attention to the potential Oscar winners than they are to the new releases. There is one film that will actually benefit from the Oscars, Wild Tales, which earned a Best Foreign-Language Film nomination.

A horror movie about a filmmaker making a documentary about a man who claims monsters are real. It is a horror film. It has reviews that are good, but not great. And it is opening in Video on Demand. Its box office chances are nearly zero.
A Canadian documentary / comedy about a man trying to become Canada's biggest martial arts movie star. There are only four reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but all four of them are positive. I think it is too out there to find an audience in theaters. Kung Fu Elliot opens this weekend in three theaters and next weekend it expands to four more theaters. It also opens on Video on Demand on Tuesday. Check out the official site for more details.
A sequel to Hope and Glory, which came out nearly 30 years ago. The earlier film earned five Oscar nominations. This film isn't as good, but it is good enough that it should find an audience in theaters. Or at least it likely would under normal circumstances. Queen and Country opened on Wednesday at the Film Forum in New York City, while it has planned expansion over the coming weeks. Check out the official site for more details.
An Argentinian black comedy anthology. Black comedies rarely find audiences, nor do anthologies. Add in the foreign-language aspect and this film's chances are slim. On the other hand, its reviews are great and it is up for an Oscar, so perhaps it will find an audience on the home market. Wild Tales opens tonight in New York City and Los Angeles.
