DVD Sales - 300 Does Double Duty at Number One

August 19, 2007

Despite a busy week for new releases, 300 was able to stay on top of the DVD sales chart. This should really surprise no one as it has been tough this year for any DVD to move more than 1 million units in a single week, and with first week sales of more than 5 million units, even a sharp drop-off would leave 300 in first place. And it did have a sharp drop-off, down more than 70% to 1.50 million units sold this week for a total of 6.60 million after two. This works out to $149.82 million in total sales, which is close to the film's entire theatrical haul.

The rest of the top five was entirely populated by new releases, starting with Disturbia in second place with 663,000 units sold for a total of $11.27 million in sales. TMNT came in second place in terms of units sold with 564,000 but thanks to a higher list price took in $11.39 million in sales. Are We Done Yet? followed up its inexplicable strong theatrical run with a fourth place opening on the sales chart by selling 429,000 units for a first week total of $7.30 million. Rounding out the top five was The Simpsons - Season 10 at 223,000 sold for a $6.86 million total.

Other new releases to chart this week include I Think I Love My Wife in seventh with 178,000 units / $3.55 million in sales while Rome - The Complete Second Season placed 10th with 133,000 units / $6.67 million in sales. Finally, Unaccompanied Minors opened in 13th place after selling just 87,000 units for a total of $1.74 million.
