Awards Season - No Ceremony but Plenty of Winners

The WGA strike meant the Golden Globes ceremony was cancelled last night and the winners were instead announced during a half-hour press conference. For people who think the awards have become bloated, this was welcome news.

The categories and winners were...

Best Motion Picture - Drama

• Atonement

• Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

• Julie Christie for Away from Her

• Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood

• Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

• Marion Cotillard for La Vie en Rose

• Javier Bardem for No Country for Old Men

• Cate Blanchett for I'm Not There

• Julian Schnabel for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

• Joel and Ethan Coen for No Country for Old Men

• Into the Wild for "Guaranteed"

• Dario Marianelli for Atonement

• Ratatouille

• The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (France)

• Just as when the nominees were announced, it's hard to point to one film and say, "That's the big winner!"
• Atonement, No Country for Old Men, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly all picked up two wins. In addition, none of them can be looked at as the winner of significantly more prestigious awards.
• Juno was shut out last night, which is a shame, but in retrospect it is not completely unexpected. Comedies are not granted the same respect as dramas or musicals, even though they are more difficult to pull off.
• Ratatouille won for Best Animated Film, which is arguably the least shocking event of the night.
