DVD Rentals: Reaching for the Stars
December 9, 2009
Star Trek led all new releases and holdovers to dominate the rental chart this week.
It took top spot with two-and-a-half times the rentals of last week's winner and this week's second place film, The Ugly Truth.
Bruno was relatively close behind in third place, which is better than it performed on the sales chart. Up and My Sister's Keeper were in a very close battle for fourth place, while G.I.Joe - The Rise of Cobra was right behind.
The Goods opened in 18th place, which is great since it is a Blockbuster exclusive at the moment. Is Anybody There? was the final new release to chart landing in 28th place.
Overall rentals rose 6.8% to $142.9 million, according to Home Media Magazine, which is 5.8% higher than the same week last year.
Given the market's recent track record, an increase of less than 10% almost feels like a loss.
