Weekend Estimates: Iron Man Sees Off Robin Hood
May 16, 2010
This Summer's first blockbuster face-off ended with a victory for Iron Man 2 as the superhero actioner saw off the medieval actioner, Robin Hood.
Both movies enjoyed weekends roughly in line with expectations.
Iron Man 2 posted a respectable 59% drop from its opening weekend to earn $53 million, and take its domestic box office total to $212 million.
With another $210 million internationally, the movie is well on its way to topping Iron Man's $582 million worldwide tally.
Robin Hood couldn't match that level of performance, but posted a decent $37.1 million opening in North America, and earned an estimated $77 million internationally, to take it past $100 million worldwide on its first weekend.
Two other movies opened wide this weekend, and they also did about as well as expected.
Letters to Juliet picked up $13.75 million for Summit, while Just Wright scored $8.5 million for Fox Searchlight.
Both movies enjoyed per theater averages around $4,600.
How to Train Your Dragon and Date Night were once more the strongest performers amongst returning movies.
Both dropped around 25% and stayed in the top seven in their eighth and sixth weekends in release respectively.
Among limited releases, Princess Kaiulani had a solid opening weekend with an estimated $184,750 in 33 theaters, many of them in Hawaii. Looking for Eric picked up $7,300 in a single theater in New York, and The Living Wake earned $4,800 in its debut outing in one venue.
