DVD and Blu-ray Releases for October 29th, 2013
October 28, 2013
Like last week, the home market is rather slow this week. There are more than 200 new releases, which is a step up from last week when there were only 161, at least according to Amazon.com. But even so, this week is arguably worse, if you only look at the top releases. The number one release is Monsters University, but number two is R.I.P.D., which bombed both in theaters and with critics. There are not even a few limited releases to help fill out the list, like we had last week. In fact, I'm pretty sure the Christmas Releases outnumber the non-Christmas releases by a sizable margin. Fortunately, there are two contenders for Pick of the Week, including Monsters University on Blu-ray Collector's Edition or 3D Combo Pack and Degrassi: Season 12. The former is the Pick of the Week, while the latter takes home the rarely awarded Puck of the Week.

Not a lot of interesting secondary Blu-ray releases this week. I would argue La Notte and Beauty of the Devil are the only two that are really worth picking up.
There are four 3D releases this week, including two first-run releases.
A movie set in the near future when the corporation have taken over. It's a low budget action film with a better cast than most similar films have and better reviews that most similar films earn. It's not earning overall positive reviews, but if you are a fan of the genre, it is worth checking out.
A mother and daughter try to hide out in a small coastal town. They are hiding, because they are vampires. The reviews are good, but not great. They were not good enough for limited release, but they are good enough for the home market.
William Shatner travels around to various places in order to interview the five men and women who have been captains on the various Star Trek TV series. Is it worth checking out for fans of the franchise? Does it have wider appeal? Read our review to find out.
There are a huge number of Christmas releases this week, including a couple that are selling well, at least compared to the average new release on this week's list. There are also a couple I think I might be getting to review, but I'm not 100% sure which ones.
One of the longest running TV shows currently on the air. After 12 years on the air, is it still worth checking out? Or has it become a derivative parody of its former self? Check out our review for my opinion.
A TV series made by Christopher Guest, so you probably understand the style of humor in the series. It follows Chris O'Dowd as he tries to learn about his family's history, after receiving a mysterious box from an aunt he's never met. I might get this screener to review. There are not a lot of reviews online, but the ones I have read are mostly positive. If you like Christopher Guest's style of comedy, then it is very likely worth picking up.
A Prequel to Last of the Summer Wine. It only ran for two seasons, but if you like the original series, you will very likely enjoy this one as well.
According to Amazon.com, this is coming out this week. According to the distributor, it is coming out on the 19th. I will be getting three copies, one for review and the other two for a contest. It has been a while since I've seen the movie, but I remember liking it, so I'm looking forward to seeing it again.
The latest Pixar film is a prequel to the wildly successful Monsters Inc.. Can it possibly live up to its predecessor? If not, is it still worth picking up? Read our review to find out.
One of the most expensive busts of the summer. It cost $130 million to make, but only pulled in $77 million worldwide. It was plagued by bad buzz, with a lot of people calling it a clone of Men in Black. Unfortunately, its reviews were even worse than its buzz. There are almost no extras on the DVD and while there are several exclusive extras on the Blu-ray, neither is worth checking out.
A crowd-sourced documentary about Bruce Springsteen. It's a collection of home movies made by fans, but it is better than that sounds.
Just the one full series Megaset on this week's list, but it is a good show.
Its WWE, so I know nothing about it.
