International Box Office: Gravity Throws Around its Weight

October 11, 2013

Gravity opened in first place on the international chart with $28.4 million on 4,830 screens in 27 markets. This includes a number of first place openings, led by Russia, where it made $7.57 million on 1,219 screens. It also earned first place in Germany with $3.65 million on 569 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.87 million. Australia was right behind with $3.35 million on 469. Italy contributed $2.75 million on 399, while in Spain it earned $2.26 million on 325.

Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon slipped to second place with $19.5 million in 8 markets for a total of $72.0 million so far, almost all of which has come from China.

Turbo returned to the chart in third place with $9.5 million on 3,896 screens in 15 markets for a totals of $112.6 million internationally and $194.8 million worldwide. Its best opening came in Germany, where it managed $2.64 million on 681 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.79 million.

Insidious: Chapter 2 entered the international chart for the first time earning fourth place with $8.99 million on 1,628 screens in 28 markets for an early total of $26.46 million. Its best opening came in Russia where it earned second place with $4.67 million on 650 screens. It only managed fourth place in France with $1.28 million on 240 screens.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 was next with $7.90 million on 2,535 screens in 15 markets for an early total of $9.53 million. It opened in first place in Brazil with $3.17 million on 667 screens, while it had to settle for second place in Mexico with $2.79 million on 1,181 screens.

Runner Runner fell from second to sixth with just $7.5 million on 4,375 screens for a total of $23.6 million so far. The film opened in Spain and Brazil, two major markets, but failed to crack $1 million in either. In the former, it managed fourth place with $771,000 on 348 screens. In the latter, it could do no better than seventh with $519,000 on 132.

Rush landed in seventh spot with $7.5 million over the weekend for a running tally of $31.5 million. The film earned third place in Germany with $1.59 million on 432 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.82 million. On the other hand, it only managed sixth place in Australia with $1.14 million on 223 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.21 million.

The Lone Ranger opened in its last market, China, with $5.59 million, which was only enough for fourth place in that market. Over the weekend, it pulled in $7.0 million for a running tally of $165.9 million. The film needed to make that much domestically and twice that internationally to break even, so the studio is going to lose a bundle here.

Inferno 3D opened in second place in China and ninth place worldwide. In total, it pulled in $6.5 million in 7 markets. It managed $14.21 million in China, but that was for the full week.

The Smurfs 2 rounded out the top ten with $6.39 million on 3,789 in 66 markets for totals of $261.9 million internationally and $331.96 million worldwide. This is a good run, but not to sound like a broken record, the sharp decline from the original makes the upcoming sequel.....

There were major milestones this weekend for two films, both of which star Joey King. Odd coincidence. The Conjuring crossed $300 million worldwide and now sits at $305.8 million. This is more than enough to ensure a profit for this film and whatever sequel the studio is working on right now. The other major milestone was earned by White House Down, as that film crossed $200 million, barely, reaching $200.53 million by the end of the weekend. It would need to sell several million DVDs and Blu-ray to break even, which seems very, very unlikely.
