DVD and Blu-ray Releases for August 13th, 2013

August 15, 2013

We are entering the beginning of TV on DVD season on the home market. As the fall schedule ramps up, more and more TV on DVD releases will come out. This week we have Once Upon A Time: The Complete Second Season on DVD and Blu-ray, as well as Girls: The Complete Second Season, also on DVD and Blu-ray Combo Pack. Both are worth checking out, but I'm waiting for the screeners for both, so I don't want to award either the Pick of the Week. Instead, I'm giving that honor to The Muppet Movie: The Nearly 35th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray. Meanwhile, What Maisie Knew on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack is a close second.

The Big Wedding - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A box office bomb and a critical disaster. There are almost no extras on the DVD or Blu-ray, but that hardly matters, as no matter how many extras they had would make it worth a rental.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: A Band Called Death, Damned, Eureka Seven: AO- Part 1, Flashdance, The Guillotines, Haganai: I Don't Have Many Friends, The Hot Spot / Killing Me Softly, Presidio, Seconds (Criterion Collection), Shaft, and Shane
There are not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases worth mentioning. Seconds is worth checking out, as is nearly everything Criterion Collection puts out. A Band Called Death is also worth checking out, especially if you are a fan of Punk music.

Captains Close Up - Buy from Amazon
A documentary series following William Shatner as he interviews the actors who have played captains in the Star Trek franchise. If you are a fan of the shows, and especially you are a fan of William Shatner, it is worth picking up.

Carrie Underwood: The Blown Away Tour: LIVE - Buy from Amazon
I usually don't mention these releases, but this concert DVD is selling very well, at least according to Amazon.com.

The Company You Keep - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film only earned mixed reviews, but did very well for a limited release. Extras on the DVD and Blu-ray include a couple of behind-the-scenes featurettes and a Q&A featurette. This isn't bad, so if you like political thrillers, it is worth checking out. I'm not convinced it is worth a purchase over just a rental, so try before you buy.

Doctor Who - Buy from Amazon: Story 51: Spearhead from Space (Blu-ray) and Story 69: The Green Death
Millions of Doctor Who fans have to decide if they want to upgrade to high definition. Buying every story of Doctor Who is such a daunting task that a lot of fans likely won't even start. The thought of re-purchasing all of them on Blu-ray is too much to take.

Emperor - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film opened in the dreaded "select cities", which is arguably the worst way to open a movie. Additionally, its reviews were weak, so it comes as no surprise that it didn't do well at the box office. It does have good extras (audio commentary track, making of featurette, deleted scenes, etc.) so if you are interested in the genre, it might be worth a rental.

Girls: The Complete Second Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
I wasn't able to get a screener for the first season of this show, so it is unlikely I will get a screener for the second season. The reviews for the show are good and the extras are strong, so it is worth picking up.

Hatchet III - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The Hatchet franchise comes to the end. If you are a fan of these movies, will the final installment satisfy your desires? Check out our review to find out.

The L.A. Complex: The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon
A Canadian TV series that broke records for worst ratings for a drama premiere on a Network. Ouch. It can't be as bad as its ratings, right? Check out our review to find out.

The Muppet Movie: The Nearly 35th Anniversary Edition - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
This movie was one of the first movies I reviewed. I loved the movie when I first saw it. I loved it when I first reviewed it. And I love it today. The real question is whether or not it is worth the upgrade? Read our new review to find out.

Olympus Has Fallen - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Wait for White House Down. The two films got the same Tomatometer Score, but if you are going to watch a mediocre movie about the White House under attack, watch one that has fun with the premise.

Once Upon A Time: The Complete Second Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Still waiting for the screener for this release. I loved the first season, so I'm looking forward to seeing this one.

Perry Mason: Season Nine, Volume Two - Buy from Amazon
The final release for Perry Mason, at least until they start releasing the TV movies. Did the series go out on a high note? And will fans want to complete their collection? Read our review for my opinion.

Southland: The Complete Fifth and Final Season - Buy from Amazon
This show earned mostly good reviews, but never truly found an audience on TV. It managed to survive five seasons, which is better than most shows do, but it was never a hit during any of those seasons.

TV on DVD Full Series Megasets - Buy from Amazon: Dragon Ball Z: Rock the Dragon Collector's Edition
An early Megaset coming out this week. It is more than 24 hours of episodes for $90, which is a good deal, but there's not much of a discount.

What Maisie Knew - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
A modern adaptation of a novel from Henry James about divorce and the effects of divorce on young kids. The film's reviews are fantastic. There are not a lot of extras on the DVD or the Blu-ray (audio commentary track and deleted scenes) but it is still worth picking up.
