Limited Releases: Like Limited Releases In Love

There are a trio of limited releases on this week's list earning 80% positive reviews or better. There are also a couple of films earning no reviews. Of the three best-reviewed films, No likely has the best shot at mainstream success, but I'm more interested in seeing Like Someone in Love.

A biographic documentary about Ed Pepitone, who is a stand-up comic that has a lot of fans within the stand-up community, but he's mostly unknown to the general public. The movie is earning perfect reviews so far, but with only three on Rotten Tomatoes, it is a little too soon to judge the film's quality. The Bitter Buddha opens tonight in New York City, Los Angeles, and Houston.
Rin Takanashi stars as Akiko, a prostitute from Tokyo. She drives out to her latest client, but is surprised to find he is an 81-year old widower, Tadashi Okuno, who is not interested in sex, but companionship. When her unstable boyfriend, Ryo Kase, arrives, the boyfriend thinks he's Akiko's grandfather. The film is earning excellent reviews and it has a shot at earning some measure of mainstream success. It will be more difficult because it is a foreign language film. Like Someone in Love opens tonight in three theaters, split between New York City and the Los Angeles area.
A Bollywood thriller about a photographer and his new girlfriend, who moves into his large country house. However, there's secrets in this house. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but that's common for Bollywood films. Murder 3 opened on Valentine's Day in 12 theaters, which is high for most limited releases, but low for this niche market.
Gael Garcia Bernal star as René Saavedra, who in 1988 ran the advertising campaign that helped defeat Augusto Pinochet in Chile. The film is earning some of the best reviews of the week, and it has enough star power to think it could thrive in limited release. It probably doesn't have a strong enough connection to audiences here to expand significantly, but it has a good shot at winning the race on the per theater chart. No opens tonight in New York City and the Los Angeles area.
This film has a lot of name power for a limited release, but there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The film focuses on the same events in a 20-minute span, but seen from five different perspectives. It is an interesting idea, if not completely original, but the lack of reviews is very troublesome. The Power of the Few opens tonight in Columbus and Youngstown, Ohio.
One of the more high profile limited releases of the week, it is also earning some of the weakest reviews. It tells the story of Lincoln, this time played by Tom Amandes, but most critics are complaining about the weak script and the low production values. Saving Lincoln opens tonight at the Quad Cinema in New York City.
