Limited Releases: Spoiler Alert

It's a relatively slow week for limited releases, especially if you go by the number of theater counts we've received so far. We only have a theater count for one film, Knife Fight, which likely won't have a significant opening. The film I'm most looking forward to seeing is the spoilerific John Dies at the End, but there are multiple reasons why it won't thrive in theaters. If there is only one release on this week's like that will thrive in theaters, it's Yossi, but even then it has just a 50/50 chance.

This film had an Oscar-qualifying run already, so there's little to add this week. The reviews are excellent and Werner Herzog does have a following, but I wouldn't bet on it finding an audience in theaters. Happy People opens tonight at the IFC Center in New York City.
This film has one of the weirdest trailers I've seen in a while. However, it likely won't have a strong theatrical run. It is the wrong genre for limited release, its reviews are mixed, and it is already playing on video on demand. Hopefully I will get a chance to review it when it comes out on DVD / Blu-ray. John Dies at the End opens tonight at the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles.
An idealistic campaign worker tries to help a flawed candidate get elected, because he feels this candidate can actually help people. After an election that lasted roughly four years, I think people are burned out on politics. Also, the reviews are terrible. Knife Fight opens tonight at the IFC Center in New York City and the Noho 7 in Los Angeles.
A movie set in the world of competitive video games. There are people out there that make their living playing video games. It's the wrong genre for limited release and there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. noobz comes out in theaters tonight, but is playing on Video on Demand already and hits DVD on Tuesday.
The latest Bollywood film to hit theaters stateside. It is a revenge flick set in the world of organized crime. It should find an audience within its niche market, but there's probably little crossover appeal.
An intervention goes wrong when one friend tries to help another get off meth. So far there are only four reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a bad sign. All of them are positive, which is a great sign. However, it is still the wrong genre for limited releases and it is already playing on Video on Demand. Resolution opens tonight at the Arena Cinema in Los Angeles.
Two film editors are hired to clean up a film, but the job is complicated by a monster of a director and a flirtatious leading lady. So far the film is earning perfect reviews, but there are only six of them online. It could find an audience with art house aficionados, but I don't think it will expand beyond, especially since it is playing on Video on Demand as well. Supporting Characters opens tonight at the Cinema Village in New York City.
A South Korean film about a wealthy, but dysfunctional family. It is written and directed by Im Sang-soo, whose previous film, The Housemaid, was also about a rich dysfunctional family. This film's reviews are much weaker, so much so that it likely won't find an audience in limited release. The Taste of Money opens tonight at the IFC Center in New York City.
A sequel to Yossi & Jagger. Yossi is trying to deal with the death of his lover while adapting to civilian life as a doctor and trying to keep his sexuality secret. The film's reviews are nearly perfect, but the original wasn't able to find an audience in theaters. Yossi opens tonight at the Angelika Film Center.
