Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Venom: The Last Dance

Although The Wild Robot began last weekend as the widest release, newcomer Smile 2 took the top spot at the weekend box office, compiling just over $23 million, and surpassing the former by $13 million in its first three days. The Wild Robot

It is rare that a film becomes the widest release in the land entering its fourth weekend on the big screen, but that is right where The Wild Robot has found itself, only losing 25 locations this time around. Opening on September 27th, the movie was edged out by another robot feature, as Transformers One eclipsed the newcomer by eight cinemas in its second weekend at the box office. This weekend The Wild Robot holds the top spot, playing in over 200 more theaters than the second-widest release, as Smile 2 lands in 3,619 locations. More...

The animated feature tallied up just shy of $36 million in its first three days and currently enjoys a six-day cume of $43 million. After a three-week reign as North America’s widest release, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has finally dropped below 4,000 theaters, making room for last weekend’s newcomer, Transformers One, to edge into the top spot as widest release this weekend. It will barely surpass another debut, The Wild Robot, by just eight locations. This weekend, audiences can look forward to a variety of new wide releases. More...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Last weekend’s highly anticipated arrival of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice surpassed most expectations at the box office, tallying up just over $111 million in domestic receipts, while earning north of $36 million from overseas markets.
