It was a good week for top-notch releases with plenty that are worth picking up. But there were two films that were obvious choices for DVD Pick of the Week: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Adventures of Baron Munchausen. In both cases, I would recommend the Blu-ray versions over the DVD. (On a side note, there were a few late spotlight reviews this week, and next week there will be a few more. Hopefully I will catch up by then, but there's always a chance that more screeners will arrive late in the meantime.)

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead opened in first place on the per theater chart with an impressive average of $36,919 in two theaters. Pete Seeger: Power in Song and Wristcutters: A Love Story were well back but still strong with averages of $11,945 and $10,506 respectively. While those were the only three films to creak $10,000 on the per theater chart, two others came very, very close: Saw IV at $9,977 and Blade Runner at $9,915.

Only two wide releases this week, and while there were many more limited releases, there weren't many sites that stood out and demanded to be given the Weekly Website Award. In fact, there were more movies released this week without site than were released with sites that were merely above average. The best of this humble group was Dan in Real Life - Official Site, and it's the winner of the Weekly Website Award.

Despite being a busy week for limited releases, only a couple of them are earning the overwhelmingly positive reviews that limited releases need to survive the demanding art house crowds. In fact, there are more earning less than 50% positive than there are earning 80% positive, which is generally the number I use as the minimum needed to survive in limited release.

It's the first box office prediction contest for November and there's a bit of a toss up for the number one film. While American Gangster has a shot at first place, Bee Movie is this week's target film.
To win one must simply predict the box office opening for Bee Movie.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of the Sicko on DVD, (which doesn't hit stores till November 6th).
Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of The Other Conquest on DVD.
In addition, both above winners and one additional one chosen arbitrarily will also win a poster from Music Within signed by five members of the main cast and the director.
Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!
