It's still a slow time of year for home market releases. It's too late for the Christmas shopping rush, while it is still too early for Awards Season releases to come out. There are a few limited releases, direct-to-DVD releases, TV on DVD releases, and catalogue titles that are of interest, but the best of the best is Zombieland. While both formats are worth checking out, the Blu-ray is the Pick of the Week.

Wrong Turn at Tahoe is a direct-to-DVD organized crime movie starring Harvey Keitel, Miguel Ferrer... and Cuba Gooding, Jr. Oh boy. After winning an Oscar for Jerry Maguire and shining in As Good as it Gets, Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s career has been filled with miss after miss and for a while now his films have had a better chance at being dumped direct-to-DVD than being a hit with critics and / or moviegoers. This movie wasn't able to end the box office slump, but can it at least be better than Way of War, which I reviewed previously? Oh please let it be better than Way of War.

As it is usually true at this time of year, there are very few major releases hitting the home market this week.
Most of the films on this week's list that opened wide were critics and / or box office disappointments, but at least there are a number of smaller films to pick up the slack. This includes Big Fan, which features what should be a star making performance by Patton Oswald, but the DVD isn't exactly loaded with extras. That's not an issue with Moon, as both the DVD and the Blu-ray are loaded with extras. The best release of the week is arguably The Hurt Locker and both its DVD and Blu-ray are Pick of the Week material. However, it is likely that it will be joined by Transformers - Season 2 - Volume 2, once the screener arrives.

There's an excellent mix of new releases this week, including Star Trek on DVD and Blu-ray.
There are a few TV on DVD releases, including Andy Barker, P.I. - The Complete Series, as well as several Blu-ray releases of note: Galaxy Quest, Gone With the Wind - The Ultimate Collector's Edition, and The Professional.
All of these are contenders for the DVD Pick of the Week, but if I were to narrow them down to one selection, it would be Star Trek on Blu-ray.
There are plenty of spotlight reviews this week, enough to split the column into two parts, with the first part found here.
