Walking Away With the Win

March 11th, 2006

In a week that saw four new releases in the top ten, Walk the Line won the weekly race with $11.78 in DVD rentals. (Like many releases, it was either not released on VHS or the studio is not tracking VHS rentals.) More...

Saw Stands Up to Competition

March 4th, 2006

Despite crumpling by 47% during its second week of release, Saw II remained in first place on the rental charts with $5.29 million for the week and $15.34 million in total. More...

DVD Releases for February 21, 2006

February 20th, 2006

As usual, there's a very strange mix of DVDs coming out tomorrow with something for even the most unique of tastes. As for the best of the best, The Memory of a Killer - Buy from Amazon is the DVD Pick of the Week, only the third foreign language film to earn that distinction. Honorable mentions include two films that were unfortunately neglected when they first came out, Class of 1984 - Buy from Amazon and Erik the Viking - Buy from Amazon. Neither of which would be considered high art, but I like them and getting to highlight personal favorites of mine is one of the perks of the job. More...

Oscar Contest - Category Highlight - Best Support Roles

Mountain of Oscar Nominations

January 31st, 2006

Brokeback Mountain again led the list of nominees as with 8 Oscar nods. There were three films with six nominations a piece, Crash, Good Night and Good Luck, and Memoirs of a Geisha, (although for that last one, they were all the less prestigious technical awards. More...

SAG Singles out Cowboys

January 6th, 2006

Of the 13 awards the Screen Actors Guild will hand out on January 29th, 2006, five will be awarded to theatrical releases. And like past awards nominations, Brokeback Mountain again led the way, with four in total. However, this time there were two films close behind as Crash and Capote each received three nominations. More...

Cowboys find Gold in Brokeback Mountain

December 13th, 2005

Brokeback Mountain was the big winner today as Golden Globe nominations were announced. With seven nods, it led all films, which is an important Oscar indicator. More...

Box Office Doom

October 24th, 2005

The box office wasn't knee deep in doom, it was more like ankle deep in Doom. With almost every film missing expectations, there was another steep decline at the box office this weekend, at least on the year-to-year comparison. Week-to-week the box office was up just 0.7%, but it was down 16.5% from last year. Year-to-date, 2005 has now brought $6.957 billion, which is about 8% lower than this time last year. More...

Analysts Predict Box Office Doom

October 21st, 2005

Another week, another four movies opening wide. But only one of those films is earning positive reviews. And with the overall weakness in the market, the four films combined openings could be less than last year's number one film. But hopefully the box office numbers will be strong enough to avoid that fate. More...

2005 Preview: October

October 1st, 2005

October is a transition month. No holidays to boost the box office, but at least Halloween will help the few Horror films playing during the month. There are no sure-fire winners this month, nor does there appear to be any major flops. The competition will again hurt box office potentials as there are on average four wide releases each weekend, and that is way too many. Also worth noting, with award season heating up, there are more and more limited releases that could make noise at the box office (Good Night and Good Luck, for example). Discuss the upcoming movies on our forums. More...

September 22nd, 2005

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Here the list of this week's releases, a couple of new sites and few updates. This week's list is a little shorter than usual partially because I'm moving today and had to complete the list on Wednesday. Because of this there was no site that really stood out as deserving the Weekly Website Award; perhaps next week there will be two winners. More...
