This should be a strong week for DVD sales, as Alice in Wonderland hits the home market. While the $1 billion blockbuster is leading the way in terms of sales, it isn't the best release on this week's list. That would be Life (the version narrated by David Attenborough) on DVD or Blu-ray. Both formats of the show are excellent value, but the high definition is worth paying extra for and is our Pick of the Week. On a side note, there are two other releases that could vie for Pick of the Week, The Man with No Name Trilogy on Blu-ray and Burn Notice: Season Three.
We'll have more on those when the screeners arrive.

The summer slump on the sales chart was not evident this week, even though there were not that many new releases to deal with. The number one film was Gran Torino, which sold an amazingly strong 2.61 million units for $42.94 million in consumer spending at retail during its opening week.
It just missed the top ten for 2009, and it will undoubtedly climb the chart over the coming weeks.

Gran Torino led all new releases and the rest of the DVDs on the rental chart with nearly two-and-a-half times the revenue of second place rental, He's Just Not That Into You.

It's another slow week for DVD releases, and that really won't change until late in the Summer when TV on DVD ramps up in time for the fall schedule.
There's not much in terms of must-have releases, with Gran Torino topping that short list, but I'm not sure if the Blu-ray is worth the price over the DVD.
Also, I'm not sure it's worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week.
On a side note, the Canadian release for Corner Gas - Season Six is also coming out this week, and it is the winner of the rarely-presented DVD Puck of the Week.

One of the slowest weeks in a long, long time. Not only are there just five films on this week's list, none of the sites are even average. None even have all of the usual information presented in a boring way. Hopefully this is the worst week for the rest of the year.

It's the slowest time of year for limited releases. It's way too early to release a film for next year's Awards Season, and there's little hope for a limited release to expand wide at this time of year either. This explains why there are only three films on this week list, and only one of which is earning positive reviews. I doubt any of them will do well enough to expand significantly.

2009 got off to a great start and February hopes to continue that run, but I don't think that's likely. First of all, none of the releases coming out this month look like they have what it takes to reach $100 million. Or even $80 million. This means the best film of this month will likely be lower than the biggest-earning film of last month and the biggest earner of this month last year.
Hopefully there will be fewer outright misses and more mid-level hits, which will help 2009 keep pace with 2008.

Summer usually comes screeching to a halt early in August, usually by the second weekend in August. However, this year we could have a $100 million hit opening each of the first three weeks. Or we could have no $100 million hits opening during the whole month. On the other end, there are a number of releases that probably looked good on paper, but failed to live up to their potential, not to mention a few that could not have looked good, even on paper. (I'm looking at you, Disaster Movie.)
