2018 Preview: September

September 1st, 2018

The Predator

Overall, August was a little better than expected. Granted, there were no monster hits, but Warner Bros. had two $100 million hits in The Meg and Crazy Rich Asians. Meanwhile, Christopher Robin will come close enough to that milestone to be a hit. This allowed 2018 to stretch its lead over 2017 by over $700 million. Will that lead grow in September? Nope. Not even close. There are three major problems that will hurt September’s box office. Firstly, there are a lot of films that may or may not open wide. Secondly, there are no films opening this month that have a better than 50/50 chance of hitting $100 million. Finally... It. It destroyed records last September, earning more during its opening weekend than any film opening this month will earn in total. Fortunately, 2018 has such an enormous lead that even with It, 2018 should remain ahead of 2107 by $500 million at the end of the month. More...

Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Smurfs: The Lost Village

July 9th, 2017

Smurfs: The Lost Village

Smurfs: The Lost Village is the third theatrical release in the franchise, but it is a reboot dropping the live action elements the first two films had. Unfortunately, it had the worst box office performance in the franchise and even though it did better internationally, there likely won’t be another film in the franchise for quite a while. Is this unfortunate news? Did the franchise finally find its footing? Or was it clear it was never going to get better? More...

Featured TV on DVD Review: Homeland: Season Two

September 21st, 2013

In my opinion, Homeland was the best new release of last year. I am not alone in that opinion. In fact, given its performance at the Golden Globes and the Emmys, many, many people thought it was the best show, period. This is a double-edged sword, on the other hand, as it means there are incredible expectations for season two. Can it possibly live up to season one? Does it get even better? More...

Featured TV on DVD Review: Nickelodeon: Rootin' Tootin' Wild West

January 27th, 2013

Rootin' Tootin' Wild West comes out on DVD this week as a Walmart exclusive. However, after spending 20 minutes on their site and trying several variations of the spelling of "Rootin'" ("Rooting", "Rootin", "Rootin'") I couldn't find the link. Maybe it is in store only. Regardless, it is coming out as an exclusive this week, while it will likely be everywhere in a few months. So what shows are featured on this mixed DVD? More...

Featured Blu-ray Review: The Princess Bride

October 25th, 2012

The 25th Anniversary Edition of The Princess Bride came out on Blu-ray at the beginning of the month, and since then three more versions have been released. I'm joking, but I do have a point. This film has been released on the home market more times than I can remember. It's not even the first time it has been released on Blu-ray. So is this edition worth picking up if you didn't grab it the first time? Is it worth the upgrade? More...
