2016 - Awards Season: BAFTA - Winners - La La Lands on Top, Again

The BAFTA winners were announced on Sunday and there were very few surprises to talk about. La La Land again won the most awards with five, while only two other films, Lion and Manchester by the Sea, earned more than one award. They each won two.

• Under the Shadow: Babak Anvari (Writer/Director); Emily Leo (Producer); Oliver Roskill (Producer); and Lucan Toh (Producer)

Best Actress in a Leading Role

• Emma Stone for La La Land

Best Actor in a Leading Role

• Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

• Dev Patel for Lion

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

• Viola Davis for Fences

Best Documentary

• 13th

Best Film Not in the English Language

• Son of Saul

Best Animated Film

• Kubo and the Two Strings

Notes and Reactions...

• La La Land won the most awards, which was expected, but it didn’t win every award it was expected to win.
• For example, Casey Affleck beat Ryan Gosling for Best Lead Actor. Frankly, I disagree with that result.
• I think vote-splitting cost Zootopia the Best Animated Film Award. Three of the four nominees were from Disney. Kubo and the Two Strings was the only non-Disney nominee and I think that helped it get the win. I don’t think this will have an effect on the Oscars. There are only two Disney films nominated, not three, while there is another Stop-Motion animated film, which could draw some support from Kubo.
• The technical categories were nearly split perfectly. There are seven or eight categories (It depends on if you consider Best Original Music to be technical or not.) and there were seven winners. The only duplicate was La La Land, which won Best Cinematography and Best Original Music.
