International Top of the Chart - Potter Nears Half a Billion

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince added another $44.13 million on 11,360 screens in 63 markets for a total of $496.69 million after just three weeks of release. Worldwide the film hit $752.36 million, which is 30th place on the all-time chart. It is about a week away from topping The Prisoner of Azkaban's worldwide total, and even without any major markets left to open in, it is screaming towards $900 million worldwide. It might not be able to get there, but it will be close.
The film's best single market box office number was $6 million in France, while it now has $40 million in total there. The second biggest market of the weekend was Japan where the movie made $5.64 million on 742 screens and now has $50.16 million in total. Germany was close behind with $5.23 million on 908 screens over the weekend for a total of $49.29 million. The film remained in first place in the U.K. with $4.89 million on 568 screens over the weekend for a total of $67.90 million after three. That's like earning $350 million to $400 million here, when you take into account the relative size of the two markets, but the franchise has always been popular in the United Kingdom, for obvious reasons. The final multi-million dollar market was Australia, which added $2.53 million on 484 screens over the weekend for a total of $28.59 million after three.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince cracked $1 million in a number of markets, major and midlevel markets. This included Holland with $1.37 million on 215 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.99 million. Brazil added $1.32 million on 702 screens and now has $17.02 million in that market. In Mexico it was pushed into third place, but still earned $1.16 million on 498 screens for a total of $18.93 million. Spain was just a fraction behind with $1.13 million on 543 screens earning $17.29 million in total. Italy was even closer with $1.11 million on 813 screens over the weekend for a total of $22.72 million. Russia added $1.05 million on 632 screens for a total of $18.11 million in total.
The film has likely already surpassed $500 million internationally, while this time next week will hit $800 million worldwide. An excellent run so far.
Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Up were in a virtual tie for second place, but we will get to those and the rest of the multi-million dollar films over the weekend.
