Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for September 4th, 2012

September 3rd, 2012

This week is again loaded with TV on DVD releases, including several in the top best sellers according to Amazon.com. The best TV on DVD release in terms of comedy is 2 Broke Girls: Season One on DVD or Blu-ray, while Person of Interest: Season One on DVD or Blu-ray is the best TV on DVD release as far as the dramas are concerned. Both are contenders for Pick of the Week, but neither quite gets there. The Five-Year Engagement on Blu-ray Combo Pack comes a little close, but in the end I went with Headhunters on DVD or Blu-ray. Just keep an eye on the price of the Blu-ray. More...

Blu-ray Sales: Finding the Source of the Problem

August 12th, 2011

It was a slow week on the home market, especially on Blu-ray, where it was a rare week suffering from year-over-year declines. But more on that in a bit. The number one selling Blu-ray was Source Code with 189,000 units. It was a little disappointing on DVD and its opening week Blu-ray ratio was just under 33%, acceptable, but not great. It was visual enough that upgrading to High Definition wasn't a bad choice, but second-tier enough that I would understand if a lot of people just didn't want to bother with the extra price. More...

Analysis: Harry Potter and the Big Pile of Money

July 21st, 2011

With Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 off to a record-breaking start, the biggest-earning franchise at the worldwide box office is nearing its end. A few records are still to fall (notably, it will overtake Star Wars in a day or two to become the biggest domestic franchise), but we thought now would be good time to look back at how Harry Potter has shaped the movie industry, and the financial records it has broken along the way. For each film, we look at both the box office receipts and domestic spending on DVD, Blu-ray and video rentals. Warning: some readers may find the large numbers presented disturbing. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for June 14th, 2011

June 13th, 2011

It's actually a rather busy week for DVD / Blu-ray releases, at least for the summertime, with four first run releases coming out. Granted, those four films averaged just 21% positive reviews, so it is certainly a matter of quantity over quality. Unfortunately, the quantity of first run releases appears to have scared away quality alternatives and there are not a lot of top notch releases. There are a few that are with picking up, some of which are for limited audiences, but as far as Pick of the Week contenders go, there are none. However, True Blood: Season Three arrived late, and I'm giving the Pick of the Week honor to the Blu-ray. More...

Awards Season: Avatar Not Hurting for Oscar Nominations

February 2nd, 2010

Oscar nominations were announced at 5:38 this morning, continuing a tradition that have never been adequately explained to me. (Why so early in the morning? Does earning an Oscar nomination become sweeter if people have to wake you up to congratulate you?) Leading the way in nominations were Avatar and The Hurt Locker, both of which pick up nine nods each, many of them in the same categories. More...

DVD Sales: 2010 Starts with a Hangover

January 31st, 2010

None of the new releases were able to take top spot on the DVD sales chart for January 3, leaving The Hangover in first place for the third week in a row. It added 692,000 units and $12.43 million to take its running tallies to 6.63 million units and $125.40 million. More...

DVD Sales: Holiday Wrap-Up

January 20th, 2010

Thanks to the holidays, DVD sales numbers were not reported on our usual schedule, but next week we should be back to normal, so it's a perfect time to wrap up some of the interesting notes from over the holidays.

The week after Black Friday saw the release of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and Terminator Salvation, neither of which matched expectations, although made up for their poor DVD performance somewhat by selling well on Blu-ray. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 8th, 2009

December 8th, 2009

According to Amazon, there are about 300 DVDs and Blu-ray being released or re-released this week and about half of them are Harry Potter releases. Well, maybe not, but it almost feels that way. The only one of these that is really worth picking up is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Blu-ray; in fact, it is the DVD Pick of the Week. Also sharing that honor is The Cove on DVD, Julie & Julia on DVD or Blu-ray, and Lost - Season Five on Blu-ray. My bank account is going to take a big hit this week. More...

New Moon Sets New Record for Midnight Screenings

November 20th, 2009

Everyone in the industry was expecting the opening of The Twilight Saga: New Moon to be big, but few would have predicted that it would top the performances of The Dark Knight and Harry Potter to record the biggest midnight opening in movie history. But that's exactly what it did, as it earned a massive $26.27 million in 3,514 theaters to beat the previous record of $22.2 million, held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. More...

Scary Amounts of Competition

October 1st, 2009

There should be six new films in the top ten this weekend, or rather three new films, two re-releases, and one film expanding into the top ten. However, while there is a lot of activity, only one of these films is opening in more than 3,000 theaters while the others are opening in less than 2,000. Because of this, there's not much doubt about which film will top the chart, but there is a question of by how much. There is also a question of when the overall box office will be able to keep up with last year. More...

International Details - Dusk for Ice Age

September 19th, 2009

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs fell out of the top five this past weekend earning $7.08 million on 3521 screens in 35 markets for a total of $670.44 million internationally and $865.11 million worldwide. It is now the third highest grossing film internationally of all time, while it is 18th place worldwide. That's quite a gap. The film remained in first place in Italy earning $3.14 million on 690 screens over the weekend for a total of $33.63 million after three. So far the film has earned more than 77% of its worldwide box office internationally, which is a very high percentage, and it will keep creeping higher as its international run comes to a close. More...

International Details - An Interesting Proposal

September 12th, 2009

The Proposal had massive gains this past weekend and just failed to reach the top five with $5.83 million on 2160 screens in 42 markets for a total of $124.60 million internationally and $285.57 million worldwide. It is now the biggest worldwide hit for Sandra Bullock, and it still has a chance to overtake Speed internationally. This week it debuted in third place in Italy with $1.43 million on 354 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.86 million during its opening, which is much weaker than its performance here. It has yet to open in France, which is key in its quest to overtake Speed, but even if it bombs there and in Japan, it will still hit $300 million worldwide. More...

International Top Five - Basterds Bring Glory to Tarantino

September 2nd, 2009

Inglourious Basterds remained in first place with $19.89 million on 2854 screens in 31 markets for a total of $59.63 million internationally and $132.66 million worldwide. The film had no major openings this week and its holds were all over the map. On the one hand, it was down just 22% in Germany adding $3.28 million on 461 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.54 million after two. On the other hand, the film was down 65% in the U.K. to just $1.83 million on 443 screens over the weekend, but it has earned a nearly identical $9.52 million after two. Other markets where the film took top spot include France, where the film added $5.4 million over the weekend for a total of $13.5 million after two, while in Australia it added $1.79 million on 266 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.49 million. The next major market opening for the film is Spain in a couple weeks, while it has major market openings till the end of November. Even if the film didn't have any major market openings, it would still reach $100 million internationally and $200 million worldwide, which would make it the biggest hit of Quentin Tarantino's career. More...

International Top Five - Glourious Debut for Basterds

August 26th, 2009

Inglourious Basterds made its debut on the international market taking first place with $27.49 million on 2650 screens in 22 markets. This includes first place openings in a number of major markets, led by France where it opened with $6.09 million on 500 screens; this is not really surprising as Quentin Tarantino is extremely popular in that market. The U.K. was close behind with $5.92 million on 444 screens, while it also topped the charts in Germany ($4.20 million on 439 screens) and in Australia ($2.56 million on 266). On the other hand, the film was stuck in second place in Russia, but still performed well with $2.55 million on 340 screens. So far the film is tracking well ahead of Kill Bill - Volume 1 and should become his biggest hit of all time topping Pulp Fiction. More...

International Top of the Chart - Joe Slows But Still Tops Chart

August 19th, 2009

G.I.Joe remained in top spot on the international chart with $26.12 million on 6875 screens in 49 markets for a total of $91.58 million. The film had only one major opening of note, Germany, but while it finished first there, it still struggled with just $1.74 million on 474 screens. It earned more in South Korea with $2.70 million on 488 screens over the weekend and $10.48 million after two. It added $1.75 million on 514 screens over the weekend in France for a total there of $5.66 million. It had near identical results over the weekend in Japan ($1.36 million on 385 screens) and in the U.K. ($1.35 million on 442 screens) and it now has $6.99 million and $6.32 million in those two markets. So far it is hard to be overly impressed by these results, especially when compared to its production budget. The only way this film gets a sequel is if it is a massive hit on the home market, and even then I think the studio will demand a cut in costs. More...

Nine Helps '09 Strive to Become Number One

August 18th, 2009

Nine was the lucky number over the weekend as District 9 topped the charts with better than expected results. Also, nine of the ten film talked about in Thursday's column met or exceeded expectations. This helped the box office bring in $142 million overall, which was only 3% lower than last weekend. More importantly, it was 14% higher than the same weekend last year, which was much better than expected. Year-to-date, 2009 has earned $6.86 billion in total revenue, which is 6.6% higher than last year's pace. More...

International Details - Potter Hits Half a Billion

August 16th, 2009

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince became just the second film of the year to reach $500 million on the international chart, but the sixth film of that franchise to reach that milestone. Over the weekend it earned $22.85 million on 9346 screens in 63 markets for a total of $548.68 million internationally and $822.53 million worldwide after just four weeks of release. The film is running on holdovers, but it did place third in France adding $3.78 million on 918 screens over the weekend for a total of $45.08 million in that market. Meanwhile it remained in first place in Germany with $2.74 million on 908 screens giving it $54.68 million in total. Its best market overall remains the U.K. where it has made $73.85 million, including $2.25 million on 535 screens over the past weekend. More...

Nine Aiming at Number One

August 14th, 2009

As summer slows down, the number of new releases speeds up. This week we have five films with a shot at reaching the top ten, but only three of those are opening truly wide, and only one is a saturation-level release. It's hard to say if this week is much stronger or weaker than last year, but it should be close. More...

G.I. Joe Fires Up the Box Office

August 11th, 2009

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra topped expectations and that helped 2009 finally snap its month-long slump at the box office. Overall the industry brought in $146 million, which was 17% higher than last weekend, and more importantly, 22% higher than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has brought in $6.64 billion, which is 6.6% higher than 2008's pace; however, while that's impressive, it is seriously off its highs for the year and 2009 will need to work to make sure ticket sales don't fall behind last year's pace. More...

Go Joe!

August 7th, 2009

August begins with the movie industry hoping that summer will last at least one more week. There is some hope that we will have a $60 or $70 million opener this weekend, but even if G.I.Joe earns just half of that, it will be a better start than the top film from last year and hopefully that means 2009 will finally end its recent slump. More...

International Top of the Chart - Potter Nears Half a Billion

August 5th, 2009

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince added another $44.13 million on 11,360 screens in 63 markets for a total of $496.69 million after just three weeks of release. Worldwide the film hit $752.36 million, which is 30th place on the all-time chart. It is about a week away from topping The Prisoner of Azkaban's worldwide total, and even without any major markets left to open in, it is screaming towards $900 million worldwide. It might not be able to get there, but it will be close. More...

Worth the Wait to See Potter on IMAX

August 4th, 2009

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince finally opened in IMAX theaters last Wednesday and it didn't take long to see the impact. Over the weekend the film made $3.2 million on 166 IMAX screens for a total of $4.7 million after five days of release. This represents nearly 18% of the film's weekend haul while its per theater average was just over $19,000 on IMAX. Internationally the film added $900,000 on 62 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.4 million internationally and $13 million worldwide. More...

Funny People, Depressed Box Office

August 3rd, 2009

2009 took another hit at the box office over the weekend, bringing in just $125 million. This might seem like a huge amount, but that's 17% lower than last weekend and 18% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date 2009 has earned $6.43 billion, which is 7.0% more than the running tally from this time last year, and if 2009 can just maintain pace with 2008 for the rest of the year, then the total ticket sales will reach $10 billion for the first time ever. However, we haven't matched box office numbers in nearly a month, so things will need to turn around soon. More...

Weekend Estimates: Funny People Wins Weekend

August 2nd, 2009

On a weekend that was modest overall for the industry, Funny People took top spot on the box office chart with a $23.4 million opening weekend, according to Universal's Sunday estimate. The movie is Judd Apatow's third directorial effort, and the opening falls in the middle of his range so far, ahead of The 40-Year-Old Virgin's $21.4 million but some way behind the $30.7 million opening enjoyed by Knocked Up. It's also something of a disappointment for an Adam Sandler movie, as he has become more accustomed to $30 million plus openings. More...

Will There be a Lot of Funny Business at the Box Office?

July 30th, 2009

The final weekend in July starts today, while August starts the day after. It's not a great weekend to open a movie, and of the three wide releases, only one has any real box office potential. Even worse, this time last year there were two films that made $40 million or more at the box office, which means 2009's lead on 2008 will continue to shrink. More...

International Top of the Chart - Harry Holds On

July 29th, 2009

Unlike its domestic run, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was able to remain on the top of the chart internationally. It did so with $84.60 million on 12,877 screens in 62 markets for a total of $427.88 million after just two weeks of release. The film became just the 45th film to crack $600 million worldwide and with a total of $649.18 million as of Sunday, it is on 39th place on that chart and could climb into the top ten before it is done. More...

Force to be Reckoned With

July 28th, 2009

As expected, the weekend box office was soft compared to last week, as well as the same weekend last year. That said, it was not as bad as it could have been and all three new releases topped expectations. Overall, total ticket sales were $151 million over the weekend, down 5.8% from last weekend and 16% from last year. Year-to-day, 2009 still has a substantial lead over 2008 at $6.22 billion to $5.76 billion and even the lack of a The Dark Knight type hit won't be enough to close that gap. It would take an extended slump at the box office before 2009 relinquished its lead. More...

Weekend Estimates: G-Force Conquers Potter

July 26th, 2009

G-Force showed that 3-D movies are still enough of a novelty to generate good business over the weekend as the kid adventure beat Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at the top of the chart, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. The margin of victory is sufficiently small that the 1/2 spots could be reversed when final figures are announced on Monday. The Ugly Truth wasn't far behind in third place. More...

Will New Releases Force Potter Out of First Place?

July 23rd, 2009

There is almost no chance 2009 will be able to keep pace with last year, and saying 'almost no chance' is overstating 2009's chances. This time last year, The Dark Knight added $75 million to its box office, which is more than all three new releases will earn this week, combined. More...

International Top of the Chart - Half-Blood Prince is the New King

July 22nd, 2009

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opened in first place on the international market with $183.35 million on 12,797 screens in 53 markets over the weekend for a total of $237.10 million after five days of release. That's the biggest international opening ever, while its worldwide total of $395.12 million is also a record topping Spider-man 3's record of $382 million. So far the film is just $10 million behind its reported total budget ($250 million for production and $155 million for worldwide P&A) and it is well on its way to profitability. More...

Potter's Powerful Early International IMAX Results

July 21st, 2009

While Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has to wait till the 29th before Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen makes room on domestic IMAX screens, the film has had its first taste of IMAX success. It earned an international record of $3.6 million on just 62 screens over the five days from Wednesday through Sunday, which was the biggest five-day opening for the format. Other international records set by the latest Harry Potter film include the biggest opening Wednesday of all time ($570,000) and the biggest single day of all time ($875,000). More...

Summer's Hot on the Per Theater Chart

July 21st, 2009

(500) Days of Summer led the way on the per theater chart with an outstanding average of $30,907, which was nearly twice as much as the second placed film. That honor went to the overall box office champion film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which earned an average of $17,997. Alien Trespass skyrocketed into third place with $14,405 in one theater thanks to special screenings at the Fantasia Montreal Film Festival. The final film to reach the $10,000 mark was A Woman in Berlin with $12,439, also in one theater. More...

Hot-Blooded Weekend

July 21st, 2009

The year-to-year box office comparison has been hit hard over the weekend due to the competition from The Dark Knight, which opened this weekend last year. That film alone made $158.41 million over three days. This year, the total box office was $160 million, or 38% lower than last year. It was 12% more than last weekend, and 2009 is still ahead of 2008 by a 10% margin, $5.98 billion to $5.44 billion. But there's no chance things will rebound this coming week. More...

Weekend Estimates: Half-Blood Prince Posts $79.5 Million Opening Weekend

July 19th, 2009

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has posted a $79.5 million opening weekend, according to Warner Bros.' estimate released on Sunday. The movie's daily box office was an estimated $26.8 million on Friday, $29.2 million on Saturday and $23.4 million on Sunday -- and represents a remarkable level of consistency over the first five days in release, after a huge performance at midnight screenings on Wednesday. The five-day total of $159.7 million is a new record for the franchise at this stage of a run (see comparison chart for Harry Poter Movies), although it does leave the movies somewhat behind the blistering early pace of The Dark Knight and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of July 17th, 2009

What is likely the last monster hit of the summer came out this week, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but its Official Site is only average compared to most saturation level releases and weak compared to most previous sites from the franchise. More...

Potter Update: Half-Blood Prince Earns Estimated $21.925 Million on Day Two

July 17th, 2009

This morning's early estimate for the second day's gross for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is $21.925 million, down over 60% from Wednesday's opening. Even when we exclude Wednesday's midnight screenings, that's down almost 40%, which is a bigger drop-off than we were expecting. However, it is in line with the second day for Order of the Phoenix, which dropped 58% from its opening day. More...

(Updated) Potter Update: Warner Bros. Reports $58,175,412 Opening Day

July 16th, 2009

Warner Bros. has announced the official opening day gross for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: $58,175,412. That's the fourth-biggest single day in history, behind the opening days for The Dark Knight, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Spider-man 3. It's also the second-biggest non-holiday-weekend-influenced Wednesday of all time, behind Revenge of the Fallen. More...

Potter Update: Warner Bros. Report $58.38 Million Estimated Opening Day

July 16th, 2009

Warner Bros. has reported an estimated $58.38 million opening day for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, perhaps slightly lower than expected given the incredible midnight business, but still the fourth-biggest day in history. More...

Going for Blood

July 15th, 2009

2009 has hit a bit of a rough patch when compared to 2008, and it is unlikely to get better this weekend. That is not to say there are no prime releases — far from it. However, this time last year saw the release of The Dark Knight, and there are very few who think any movie this year will be able to compete with that film. That said, the number who think we could have a huge weekend is growing. More...

Potter Update: Midnight Screenings Estimate Raised to $22.5 Million

July 15th, 2009

We have an updated estimate for the midnight screenings of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Projections put the box office gross at a massive $22.2 million in revenue in 3,003 theaters, nearly $4 million more than The Dark Knight's previous record, and an indication that Half-Blood Prince could be on its way to an all-time single day record. That figure stands at $67,165,092 (again Dark Knight currently leads the way). That would require another $45 million in ticket sales through the rest of today, and a quick comparison with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen shows how reasonable that goal is. More...

Potter Alert: Half-Blood Prince Pulls in Estimated $20 Million at Midnight Screenings

July 15th, 2009

Variety reports that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince grossed an estimated $20 million at midnight screenings last night. If that number holds, it will set a new record for the biggest gross from midnight screenings, topping the $18 million earned by The Dark Knight last year. It's also streets ahead of the $12 million picked up by The Order of the Phoenix two year ago. If the new release maintains this pace, it should comfortably top $200 million by the end of the weekend, and beat Dark Knight's five-day record of $203.7 million. We'll keep you posted on news as we get it. More...

Potter Alert: Half-Blood Prince will Debut in 4,275 Theaters on Wednesday

July 14th, 2009

Warner. Bros. have announced that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will open in 4,275 theaters on Wednesday. That's 84 more venues than the 4,181 managed by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2007, although the previous movie in the franchise expanded to 4,285 theaters on its first Friday. Assuming they manage to pick up a few more locations this time around, the movie should slot in at third place on the list of widest opening weekends. Breaking the all-time record looks unlikely at this point in time, but we'll keep you posted. More...

This Week's New Movie Trailers at The Numbers

July 12th, 2009

Contest - No Half-Measure

July 10th, 2009

For the third time in four weeks we have a Wednesday opening, which complicates things for the Weekly Box Office Prediction Contest. The one wide opening of the week is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and it is the target film for this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of The State - The Complete Series on DVD, as well as the related Reno 911! - Season Six on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of Penn & Teller - Bullshit - Season Six on DVD, as well as the almost totally unrelated Matlock - Season Three on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

Transformers Reaches IMAX Milestone in Record Time

July 7th, 2009

Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen made it all the way to $30 million on IMAX screens worldwide in just 12 days, which is the fastest a film has ever reached that milestone on IMAX. It added $6 million during the past weekend with a $4.6 million / $1.4 million domestic / international split. More...

2009 Preview: July

July 1st, 2009

June gave us some unexpected hits in The Proposal and The Hangover, as well as expected hits like Up, not to mention the biggest hit of the year, so far, in Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen. However, despite this, 2009 lost a bit of ground to 2008, and this will likely continue this month, as this month last year saw the release of The Dark Knight. This year we have a couple of potential $300 million hits, but nothing likely to perform on that scale. Then again, I only predicted Dark Knight would make $250 million, so we could be surprised again this year. The box office is certainly hot, and is currently running more than 12% ahead of last year's pace. More...

Transformers Changes the IMAX Record Book

June 30th, 2009

Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen rewrote the record book during its opening weekend on IMAX, earning $14.4 million on 169 IMAX screens for an average of $85,000. It had the biggest day on IMAX ($3.9 million); the biggest 5-day opening ($14.4 million); the biggest international day ($770,000 on Saturday); and the biggest three-day international weekend ($2.1 million). Worldwide, the film has $18.3 million in the super-large format, with plenty more upside to come. In comparison, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian managed $15.4 million worldwide during its run. More...

Star Trek's Sophomore Stint Breaks more IMAX Records

May 20th, 2009

The second weekend for Star Trek saw even more records fall as it added $5.3 million on 138 screens over the weekend for a per screen average of $38,000, both of which are records. Overall the film has made $19.9 million worldwide playing on 163 screens, which is also a record for this point in a film's IMAX run. That's the good news. The bad news is on Friday, the film will be booted out of IMAX theaters to make room for Night at the Museum 2. More...

Star Trek Rewrites Record Book on IMAX

May 14th, 2009

The Star Trek prequel re-wrote the history of the franchise a little bit, but while that didn't please all fans, the box office results should. In fact, the film broke records on IMAX earning $8.5 million on 138 screens for a record setting per screen average of $62,000. It also made $1.1 million internationally on 25 screens. More...

IMAX Opening of Monstrous Proportions

March 31st, 2009

Monsters vs. Aliens broke several records over the week on IMAX screens on its way to a weekend haul of $5.1 million on 143 screens, which is the highest opening for an IMAX 3-D film. Additionally, the film earned $2.02 million on Saturday, which was the highest Saturday box office for any IMAX film, 3-D or not. The film's per screen average on IMAX was $35,682 compared to its non-IMAX per screen average of roughly $8,400. Internationally, the film broke IMAX records in a number of markets, including Russia, the Ukraine, and the Philippines, but numbers were not immediately available. More...

Eyes Wide on IMAX

March 11th, 2009

Watchmen may have missed analysts' expectations overall, but it was stellar on IMAX. In fact, it earned nearly 10% of its domestic haul on just 124 screens nationwide. Domestically, it pulled in $5.4 million on 124 screens for an average of $43,863, while internationally it managed $727,000 on 29. Worldwide IMAX has added $6.2 million to the film's run so far, making it one of the biggest hits in the format's history. More...

Earth Bigger on IMAX

December 17th, 2008

The Day the Earth Stood Still missed expectations during its opening weekend, at least in regular theaters. On IMAX it was fantastic, earning an estimated $3.7 million on just 123 screens to give it a per IMAX average of $30,000. That's an average that is 3.5 times higher than its overall per theater average. More...

IMAX is Not Standing Still

December 4th, 2008

While Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was pushed back to next summer and this left a gab in the IMAX schedule, it hasn't been entirely quiet lately. This week it was reported that Dolphins and Whales Tribes of the Ocean 3D reached $10 million worldwide, which is a great milestone for the film. The film continues to tour the United States, while it will make its debut in France, Mexico, and other markets in the coming months. More...

Escape Great on IMAX

November 12th, 2008

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa opened in more than 4,000 theaters in total, and that included 129 IMAX screens, where it earned $3.63 million over the weekend. That gave it a per theater average of just over $28,000 on the really big screen, which was close to double its regular per theater average. It is also more than twice the $1.6 million Eagle Eye opened with in 84 theaters in September. More...

More...

More...
