International Details: Twilight Setting But Still Strong

July 25, 2010

The top film on the international scene was published on Wednesday and can be found here.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse slipped to second place with $43.82 million on 9,527 screens in 61 markets for a total of $295.66 million internationally and $560.45 million worldwide. This includes a first place debut in Germany with $9.76 million on 767 screens over the weekend and $12.30 million in total. On the other hand, the film was down a stunning 75% in the U.K. to $5.19 million over the weekend and $33.84 million after two. The amazing growth the franchise saw from installment one to two is gone, but this is still a fantastically profitable movie.

  • Toy Story 3 remained in third place, again, this time with $32.72 million on 6,933 screens in 40 markets. After a month of release, the film has brought in $268.45 million internationally and $631.42 million worldwide. It became only the fifth Pixar film and the 52nd film overall to reach the $600 million mark at the global box office. In France the film opened in first place with $8.35 million on 735 screens, which is impressive, but below Shrek Forever After's debut three weeks ago. It was amazing in Hong Kong with $3.23 million on just 111 screens, which was more than 10 times its nearest competitor. In Japan it was down just 25% to $8.37 million on 531 screens over the weekend for a total of $27.29 million after two.
  • Knight and Day returned to the top five with $19.64 million on 5,256 screens in 49 markets for a total of $63.08 million. The film opened in first place in Australia with $3.34 million on 360 screens, but it had to settle for third place in Brazil with $2.70 million on 317. It has likely already surpassed its domestic total on the international front, while it will need to make quite a bit more before it can pay back its $117 million production budget.
  • Inception opened in fifth place with $15.91 million on 1,349 screens in 10 markets over the weekend for a total of $16.54 million. Much of this came from smaller markets, but it did debut in first place in the U.K. with $9.05 million on 452 screens. This is fairly similar to its opening here and depending on how well it holds, that could be a good sign for the future.
  • Predators slipped a couple of spots to sixth with $11.22 million on 3,893 screens in 31 markets over the weekend for a two-week total of $37.33 million. It struggled in France debuting in fifth place with $2.16 million on 384 screens. It managed fourth place in Italy, but with just $507,000 on 247 screens over the weekend and $771,000 in total.
  • Karigurashi No Arietty opened in first place in Japan and seventh place internationally with $10.35 million on 447 screens over the weekend.
  • The Sorcerer's Apprentice started its international run in 8th place with $9.41 million on 1,511 screes in 12 markets. However, it debuted in a lot of smaller markets, while the only market of note was Russia where it placed first with $5.54 million on 772 screens.
  • Bayside Shakedown 3 slipped a spot to third Japan and ninth internationally with $6.20 million on 447 screens over the weekend and $42.33 million after three. With a decline of just 18%, it had the best hold in the top ten in that market.
  • Moss debuted in first place in South Korea with $5.49 million on 748 screens over the weekend and $7.25 million in total.
  • The Last Airbender fell out of the top ten with $5.16 million on 1,297 screens in 6 markets for a total of $18.79 million. In Japan it only managed fifth place with $1.48 million on 386 screens, which is bad news. On the other hand, it fell 57% during its second weekend in Russia, which is actually better than average for that market. Over the weekend it added $3.32 million on 870 screens for a total of $14.16 million after two.
  • Despicable Me held strong, adding $4.62 million on 515 screens in 7 markets for a total of $12.05 million. Of this, it made $2.30 million over the weekend in Russia for a total of $7.42 million in that market.
  • The Karate Kid plummeted from 5th to 13th with $4.42 million on 1,496 screens in 24 markets for a total of $52.93 million. No major openings hurt, but a 61% drop-off is still not a good sign.
  • Pikachu The Movie 2010 fell 41% to $4.16 million on 369 screens in Japan lifting its total to $12.77 million. This is a larger than average decline for this particular market, but not as high as I was expecting.
  • Triple Tap added $3.27 million on 322 screens in 4 markets for a total of $17.28 million after three weeks of release.
  • L'italien opened in France, and a couple of other markets, and earned $2.80 million on 456 screens.
  • Marmaduke returned to the international chart with $2.63 million on 1,267 screens in 18 markets for a total of $21.85 million. It was aided by a third place, $1.58 million opening on 507 screens in Germany, but that was mediocre and nothing more.
  • The final multimillion dollar movie was Flirting Scholar 2, which opened with $2.55 million on 454 screens in China and Hong Kong.
