International Details: Robin Hood Nears Major Milestone
June 20, 2010
The top films on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.
For the third weekend in a row, Robin Hood remained in fourth place. This time it pulled in $7.19 million on 5742 screens in 54 markets for a total of $183.71 million internationally and $283.17 million worldwide. This week it opened in China and India, two countries that rarely release box office numbers in a timely fashion.
- The Karate Kid opened in fifth place with $6.39 million on 817 screens in 10 markets. Its biggest market was South Korea, but it only managed fifth place with $772,000 on 324 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $887,000.
- Rajneeti fell more than 50% to $5.09 million on 874 screens in 16 markets for a total of $21.27 million after two weeks of release. Normally falling more than 50% on the international market is a bad sign. However, this is better than average for an Indian film and the movie is already a blockbuster in this niche market.
- Iron Man 2 opened in Japan and this helped it back into the top ten. During the past weekend, it earned seventh place with $5.00 million on 1965 screens in 45 markets for a total of $295.16 million internationally and $594.44 million worldwide, which is better than the worldwide total of the original. In Japan it scored a close second place with $2.87 million on 414 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.73 million. Given its per screen average in the market, it will have no trouble getting to $300 million internationally, but this is not as strong as I was expecting.
- Streetdance 3-D was down just 10% to $4.87 million on 1896 screens in 21 markets for a total of $29.90 million after four weeks of release. In its native U.K., it added $1.05 million on 402 screens over the weekend for a total of $15.02 million after four. This is close to the equivalent of a $100 million movie here, taking into account the relative size of the two markets.
- Shrek Forever After fell to ninth place with $3.63 million on 1747 screens in 19 markets for a still early total of $74.71 million internationally. It opened in Australia this weekend, so it should climb the charts when the numbers are released.
- Killers entered the chart for the first time with $3.18 million on 1027 screens in 16 markets for a total of $5.47 million. Its big market for the week was Russia, but no figures were released.
- Confessions remained in the top spot in Japan and climbed a spot to 11th internationally thanks to a small increase in its weekend box office haul. Over the weekend it added $3.08 million on 266 screens for a total of $9.76 million so far.
- How To Train Your Dragon fell to 12th place with $2.96 million on 2115 screens in 34 markets for a total of $258.51 million internationally and $472.94 million worldwide.
- The Servant remained in first place in South Korea with $2.53 million on 492 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.23 million after two.
- Marmaduke fell to 14th place with $2.26 million on 1454 screens in 21 markets for a still early total of $8.48 million. No major openings hurt its performance, but the film is also showing major weakness at the box office.
- Letters To Juliet reached the chart for the first time, barely, with $2.00 million on 928 screens in 11 market for a total of $7.03 million. It biggest market was the U.K., where it opened in second place with $1.17 million on 440 screens. That was not a strong start. Its second place finish was more the result of weak competition.
