DVD Sales - Sales Slump

August 27th, 2008

New releases were at their weakest in months. In fact, outside of TV on DVD, there were no new releases in the top five, and only one in the top ten. This left Nim's Island at the top of this week's sales chart with 178,000 units for the week, which is the lowest total for a number one film on our list since we've been keeping track of sales. In total, Nim's Island has sold 644,000 units for a two-week revenue tally of $12.05 million. More...

DVD Releases for July 22, 2008 - Part I

July 21st, 2008

Wow. Another week without a single first-run release that struck me as worth picking up. This really is the slowest time of the year for DVD releases. That said, there were a number of other releases that caught my attention, including a couple of TV on DVD releases and a couple of classics from Criterion. The latter include Vampyr - Buy from Amazon and High and Low - Buy from Amazon while the former include Robot Chicken - Star Wars - Buy from Amazon and Spaced - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon. It would be virtually impossible for me to narrow it down to one selection, but Vampyr - Buy from Amazon is the better Criterion release and Spaced - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon is the better TV on DVD release. As with last week, there were so many spotlight reviews that this week's list had to be split into two. Part Two can be found here. More...

DVD Releases for July 15, 2008 - Part I

July 14th, 2008

Another week without a first run release that is in contention for the DVD Pick of the Week. Granted, The Bank Job is worth picking up, but neither the two DVDs nor the Blu-ray have enough extras to be the DVD Pick of the Week. To find the best of this week's selection you have to look at the TV on DVD list and grab Eureka Season Two. Paradoxically, while the quality is low, the quantity is high, so much so that I had to split the list into two parts. Part two can be found here. More...

International Details - Panda Packs on the Pounds

July 13th, 2008

Kung Fu Panda saw its weekend numbers climb by close to 70%, and its weekend haul of $40.16 million on 5325 screens in 40 markets was the best of its run so far. A run that has brought in $154.13 million so far. However, it still remained in second place thanks to the opening of Hancock. The film had a pair of second place openings including the U.K. where it made $8.63 million on 446 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.96 million. Meanwhile in Germany it was not as strong with $4.48 million on 831 screens, but it still managed second place. The film also slipped to second place in Australia, but it held well down just 24% to $3.83 million on 363 screens over the weekend for a total of $13.63 million. More...

International Details - Sex Still Popular Overseas

July 6th, 2008

Sex and the City fell more than 40% this past weekend, but still eared $12.94 million on 5991 screens in 53 markets over the weekend for a total of $198.97 million after a month of release. The film had no major, or even midlevel openings, in fact, it's only market of note where it hasn't opened in yet is Japan, where it does make its nationwide debut at the end of August. However, it still did well in a number of markets cracking $1 million in Australia ($1.58 million on 365 screens), Russia ($1.50 million on 496), U.K. ($1.18 million on 388), and Spain ($1.08 million on 359). In fact, in the U.K. the film has earned $49.24 million after a month of release, which is even better than it managed domestically, if you take into account the relative size of the two markets. International Details - What Happened?

June 29th, 2008

The Happening fell from first to fifth with just $14.05 million on 5579 screens in 65 markets for a total of $56.40 million after two weeks. Good news, it was able to remain in first place in France despite falling 60% to $1.93 million on 550 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.68 million after two. On the other hand, it fell from first to third in Spain down 65% to $1.20 million on 387 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.41 million after two. Even worse, it was down just under 80% in Italy and just over 80% in South Korea earning $367,000 on 338 screens and $206,000 on 293 screens respectively. Its totals of $2.77 million in the former and $2.18 million in the latter are hardly impressive, and well below its domestic run. This is a shocking decline, especially since films tend to have better legs internationally than they have domestically. And while it should earn more on the international marketplace, there's little hope of reaching $200 million worldwide now. More...

International Details - Sex on the Decline

June 22nd, 2008

Sex and the City was knocked out of top spot with $23.71 million on 5591 screens in 44 markets for a total of $136.00 million after three weeks of release. Its biggest opening came from the Netherlands, which is a midlevel market at best, but it earned $810,000 on 108 screens over the weekend and $1.23 million in total. This is a very strong opening and the film will have little trouble topping Iron Man in the market and will even come relatively close to Indiana Jones And The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull's total. Additionally, the film earned $4.29 million on 452 screens during its second weekend in Australia for a total of $14.88 million while in the U.K. it pulled in $3.50 million on 470 screens over the weekend lifting its total of $39.80 million after three. More...

International Details - Panda Feeds on International Audiences

June 15th, 2008

Kung Fu Panda started its international run in third place with $20.46 million on 1521 screens in 9 markets. The film reportedly set records in a number of its smaller, Southeast Asian debuts while its brought in an impressive $8.26 million on 821 screens in Russia and $7.84 million on 632 screens in South Korea (including midweek numbers). Next up for the film is Australia and Mexico next weekend while it has major market opening throughout the summer. More...

International Details - Sex not as Popular with International Audiences

June 8th, 2008

Sex and the City made its international debut this past weekend, and while it wasn't able to top the charts like it did domestically, it still managed a fantastic $32.77 million on 3590 screens in 14 markets over the weekend for a total of $37.52 million. Its biggest opening came in the U.K. where it dominated the market with $17.22 million on 460 screens, which is equivalent to an $80 million to $100 million opening here. It also finished first in Germany with $7.41 million on 836 screens. It also did very well in France with $6.12 million on 551 screens and in Italy with $2.74 million on 552 screens, finishing second in both markets. June 1st, 2008

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian slipped 21% during its sophomore stint adding $19.35 million on 3681 screens in 13 markets for a still early total of $51.26 million. This includes a first place, $5.34 million opening on 782 screens over the weekend in Japan, while the film has $7.81 million including midweek numbers. This was below the original's opening in that market of $8.92 million, which is troubling. More troubling news came in Mexico where it was down 51% to $3.05 million on 842 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.58 million while in Russia it was down 55% to $3.03 million on 735 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.54 million after two. International Details - Narnia is Prince of the International Charts

May 25th, 2008

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian opened in second place on the international charts with $23.31 million on 3037 screens in 12 markets giving it the best per screen average on this week's list. The film only opened in three major markets, but it finished first in all of them. This includes Russia where it managed $6.73 million on 735 screens and Mexico where it earned $6.27 million on 842 and in both cases it opened significantly higher than the original. On the other hand, while it managed first place in South Korea, its opening of $3.42 million on 670 screens over the weekend and a total of $3.90 million is significantly lower than the originals opening of $3.94 million on 262 screens over three days and $5.22 million in total. Next up for the film is its debut in Japan this weekend, while it has major openings all the way till late August. More...

International Details - What Happened to Speed Racer?

May 18th, 2008

Like it did domestically, What Happens in Vegas... managed to open in second place on the international charts. It was able to do so in part because it opened in nearly every major market over the past weekend earning solid openings in many of them. This includes second place in both the U.K. ($2.47 million on 398 screens), in France ($2.36 million on 304 screens), and in Australia ($2.33 million on 335). It also placed first in Spain with an impressive $3.77 million on 398 screens and also topped the charts in both Russia and Germany with $3.70 million on 476 screens $1.85 million on 500 screens respectively. Overall it managed to pull in $24.86 million on 3904 screens in 36 markets during its opening weekend on the charts, and should have little difficulty matching its domestic total. More...

International Details - Forbidden Falls from the Top

May 11th, 2008

The release of Iron Man hit The Forbidden Kingdom knocking it into second place with $9.63 million on 2062 screens in 11 markets for a total of $40.51 million. The film had no major openings, but it did make $1.10 million on 398 screens over the weekend in South Korea for a total of $5.63 million. More...

International Top Five - Forbidden Territory

April 30th, 2008

The Forbidden Kingdom doubled its screen and market counts and that helped it finish in first place by a wide, wide margin. Overall the film earned $16.82 million on 1082 screens in 10 markets for a very early total of $24.70 million. Major openings include South Korea, where it placed first with $3.15 million on 439 screens over the weekend and $3.60 million in total, and Russia, where it also placed first with $1.27 million on 262 screens. It was obviously stronger in the former than the latter, however, the latter was more significant since it was the film's first major test outside of the Asian marketplace, which could be called its home. If it can duplicate its performance in similar major markets in Europe, then it will have little difficulty showing a profit before long. More...

International Top Five - 21 is Number One

April 23rd, 2008

During its second weekend of release, 21 climbed into first place with $10.02 million on 1,731 screens in 21 markets for a total of $21.17 million after two. This includes a first place, $2.22 million opening on 277 screens in Russia, and a third place, $1.14 million opening on 247 screens in Italy. Meanwhile, it was able to remain in first place in the U.K. with $2.01 million on 356 screens over the weekend and $6.77 million in total and it also earned a second first place placing in Spain with $1.44 million on 255 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.77 million. This might be the last time 21 will top the charts, as the rest of its release dates are more spread out, while the summer blockbusters are just around the corner. More...

Jet Li and Jackie Chan take on Sarah Marshall

April 17th, 2008

We are getting closer and closer to the first weekend of May, and the unofficial opening of the summer blockbuster season. Because of this, studios are getting more and more reluctant to release a major film and the best most films coming out this weekend can hope for is a midlevel hit. However, while there is no obvious first place film on this week's list, that does mean we should have a close race for the number one spot and at least that should generate some interest from box office watchers. More...

International Top Five - Who's First Milestone

April 16th, 2008

No film reached $10 million over the weekend, but Horton Hears A Who did reach a major milestone. The film made $9.02 million on 4,823 screens in 41 markets for a total of $103.36 million. It did open in a number of smaller markets including Poland where it landed in second place with $507,000 on 105 screens over the weekend and $656,000 in total. However, the lion's share of the movie's weekend haul came from France where it was down just 6% to $3.02 million on 708 screens for a total of $7.01 million after two. While it did shed screens and markets this weekend, the movie isn't done yet. With openings in Italy this coming weekend, South Korea in May, and Japan in July it will be earning money well into the Summer. More...

Moviegoers Crown New (Prom) King

April 15th, 2008

Overall the box office was marginally better than expected with practically every film beating expectations. However, no film really surpassed expectations by any great amount and the overall box office was $95 million, which was almost exactly the same as last weekend. However, it was almost 20% less than the same weekend last year and now 2008 is down more than 3% from last year's pace $2.36 billion to $2.44 billion. More...

Smart Money is on Prom Night becoming the King of the Weekend

April 10th, 2008

The latest horror remake, Prom Night, is tracking stronger than expected and should win the box office race over the weekend. However, it is the only strong release of the week and could be the only film to crack $10 million over the weekend. Conversely, this weekend last year four films hit 8 digits, and this makes it very likely that 2007 will slip further behind last year's pace. More...

21 on a Winning Streak

April 8th, 2008

It was a softer than expected weekend at the box office, and expectations were no strong to begin with. Overall the box office brought in $95 million, which was down 11% from last year. More importantly, it was down a staggering 23% from the same weekend last year. Even worse, 2008 is now behind 2007's pace $2.24 billion to $2.28 billion. More...

Head Hopes to Finish on Top

April 3rd, 2008

April starts of with a... with a... well, it starts this week. We have three wide releases this week, but none seem destined for greatness. In fact, it's a limited release that might have the most exciting box office result of the week, even if it doesn't reach the top ten. On the other end, there should at least be a logjam at the top, giving box office watchers something to talk about. More...

21 Busts at the Box Office, But in a Good Way

April 1st, 2008

A mixed week at the box office, but the overall box office was a little higher than expected. That said, at $107 million the total was down 6% from last weekend. More importantly, it was down 16% from the same weekend last year. 2008 has fallen behind 2007's pace in terms of ticket sales and it up in terms of dollars by less than 1%, $2.12 billion to $2.11 billion. This lead might not hold up until the weekend. More...

Weekend Estimates: 21 Dealt the Winning Hand

March 30th, 2008

21 tops the weekend box office charts, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. The casino caper earned a healthy $23.7 million -- almost $9,000 per theater -- to leave it well clear of Horton Hears a Who, which had a very satisfying third weekend with $17.4 million, a fall of just 29%. Consider last weekend was Easter, that's a very impressive performance. More...

21 Hopes to Hit the Jackpot

March 27th, 2008

Four wide releases this week, but only two have a real shot at top spot. In fact, the other two don't really have a shot at the top five. Add in Horton Hears a Who and there should be a three-way race for first place. If Horton can pull off a victory, it would be amazing, since is already the only film released in 2008 that has repeated as box office champion. More...

2008 Preview: March

March 1st, 2008

2008 stumbled last month and there doesn't seem to be many potential blockbusters this month. By the end of March last year, there were three films releases that would reach $100 million, including one that reached $200 million, and two others that missed that milestone by less than $5 million. This year, we could enter April without a single $100 million movie. More...

The film opened in Australia and South Korea this past weekend, while it doesn't end its run till late August with Japan and it should reach several major milestones before then. More...

More...

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of March 28, 2008

March 30th, 2008

Another slow week for top-notch websites with only one that could separate itself from the pack. That site is 21 - Official Site and it was the clear winner of the Weekly Website Award. However, there are a few others that are also worth checking out.

More...
