There were more than half a dozen new releases to chart this week, including to top two sellers, although none of them were particularly strong sellers. P.S., I Love You led the way with sales of $11.88 million from 743,000 units while First Sunday placed second with 468,000 units sold and opening week revenue of $7.94 million.

One of the last major Oscar contenders is coming out this week, and it is the only real contender for DVD Pick of the Week. Fortunately, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - Buy from Amazon is certainly worth that title. There is also an honorable mention in the form of His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass - Blu-ray, which not only includes additional features from the DVD, but is actually cheaper. Easily the best High Definition release of the week.

Bienvenue Chez les Ch'its, a.k.a. Welcome to the Sticks, remained in first place in France with $4.79 million on 867 screens over the weekend for a total of $175.67 million after 8. However, it fell out of the top five internationally with $5.33 million on 963 screens in 4 markets for a total of $187.13 million. In its native market, the film has ticket sales of 19.25 million putting it about three weeks away from topping Titanic's record of 20.64 million while it is closing in on $200 million internationally. Both of those are amazing records, and the film is hardly showing signs of slowing down.

Summer blockbuster season is finally here. ... Or least it starts on Friday the 25th with the opening of Iron Man. That is this week's target film. In order to win, one must simply predict Iron Man's opening weekend box office.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win The Golden Compass and Fall of the Roman Empire, both on DVD.

Step Up 2 The Streets fell more than 40% last weekend while dropping out of the top five. This was mainly due to the lack of major openings, while its holdover results were merely average. In the U.K. it was down 42% to $2.74 million on 351 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.32 million and in Australia it was down 44% to $1.31 million on 188 screens lifting its total to $5.10 million after two. Overall it added $7.38 million on 1615 screens in 27 markets for a total of $53.21 million, which was enough to lift its worldwide total to more than $100 million.

The French film, Bienvenue Chez les Ch'its, opened over the weekend and it performed tres bien, which means very well. ... I think. I may have just said something rude in French. (On a side note, it was one of four such films to chart this weekend, although it was the only one to reach the top five. We will get to the other three on Sunday.) It set records in its native market earning $31.67 million on 793 screens over the weekend for a total of $36.58 million including previews. Overall it pulled in $32.53 million on 838 screens over the weekend for a total of $37.40 million while its per screen average or $38,816 was the best so far this year. For a film that reportedly cost just 11 million Euros to make, which is about $16 million American, this is a fantastic opening. Even if it had a larger than average P&A budget, it is likely that the film has already shown a profit.

I Am Legend is getting ready to wrap up its international run, but it isn't slowing down. This weekend it grew by 32% to $40.18 million on 4951 screens in 44 markets for a total of $221.52 million topping $200 million internationally, just as it did domestically. Openings this week including a couple major markets led by Germany where it pulled in $10.89 million on 713 screens and easily taking first place, which is not a real shock as Will Smith is a huge draw in that market. On the other hand, it performed surprisingly strong in Italy where it also captured first place with a very impressive opening weekend of $8.52 million on 486 screens. Meanwhile in Australia the film fell 63%, but that was still enough to retain first place with $3.19 million on 338 screens over the weekend and $14.79 million in total.

The film has million dollar openings in a trio of markets, the largest of which was Australia where it pulled in $8.41 million on 338 screens over the weekend and $8.58 million in total. In Greece it earned $1.30 million on 79 screens over the weekend and $1.88 million in total while in New Zealand it opened with $1.04 million on 65. Its best opening this week came in the U.K. where it pulled in $13.01 million on 440 screens over the weekend and $21.84 million since Boxing Day. At this pace, even if the film had no markets left to open in, it would be able to reach $200 million internationally. With two weeks to go, the international box office set a record bringing in $8.6 billion in total ticket sales. Additionally, all six major studios crossed the $1 billion mark during the same year, which is a first. On the other hand, the celebration is tempered by the fact that the American dollar hit record lows against the Euro this year, and was at decade old lows against the Pound, and other international currencies, which helped to artificially inflate the box office numbers.

Like it did domestically, His Dark Material: The Golden Compass debuted in first place on the international charts. However, unlike its performance domestically, its international haul was a hefty $44.31 million on 5263 screens in 27 markets for a total of $50.96 million including midweek numbers. In the U.K. the film opened first with $11.63 million on 507 screens over the weekend and $14.79 million in total, but that is significantly lower than Sunday's estimates. In France the film also took first place with $6.00 million on 776 screens, and in Spain with $5.17 million on 505 screens over the weekend and $8.07 million in total. The number one debuts continued in Germany at $4.80 million on 836 screens and in Russia with $3.68 million on 521. The Golden Compass's release schedule is certainly front loaded, but it still has openings in Italy next week, South Korea the week after, and Australia on Boxing Day, as well as Japan in March, and should earn between $200 million and $300 million internationally. Depending on how well it does on the home market in these markets, it could show a profit, but becoming a franchise is unlikely at this point.

The box office has been soft practically since summer ended, but things are starting to get desperate.
This was another week of significant declines at the box office, with overall business of just $82 million.
That's down more than 2% from last weekend, and, more significantly, down more than 15% from the same weekend last year.

His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass made a thoroughly disappointing debut in theaters over the weekend, earning just $26.1 million, according to estimates released on Sunday.
That's substantially short of the $30 million - $40 million that New Line had announced as their target, and leaves their $300 million plus investment horribly in the red.
Only a miracle can save it now.

It's been a while since we went into the final month of the year on such a down note.
Since mid-September the box office has been down on a year-to-year comparison every weekend but two.
There is some good news, including a competitive Oscar race and a strong group of films aiming for box office glory.
While there are no films that appear to be heading for the monster hits territory, there are also no films that look like outright bombs.
(Although a couple would be there if it weren't for the holidays.)
Every week at least one Oscar contender and one box office giant are being released.
This means that every weekend there is at least one film that should hit $100 million, or more.
If five or more can reach that milestone, 2007 will set the record for most $100 million films in a year.

Another big list of movie sites, but not much in the way of top-notch entries. For a movie site to be an award winner, I expect it to have all of the usual features, extras like clips, something interactive like a game, and background sound and animation.
