International Details - Step Up Falls Down and Out of the Top Five
April 6, 2008
Step Up 2 The Streets fell more than 40% last weekend while dropping out of the top five. This was mainly due to the lack of major openings, while its holdover results were merely average. In the U.K. it was down 42% to $2.74 million on 351 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.32 million and in Australia it was down 44% to $1.31 million on 188 screens lifting its total to $5.10 million after two. Overall it added $7.38 million on 1615 screens in 27 markets for a total of $53.21 million, which was enough to lift its worldwide total to more than $100 million.
- Thanks to an opening in the U.K., 27 Dresses rose into the top ten with $6.24 million on 1561 screens in 20 markets for a total of $57.67 million. It scored first place in the U.K. with $3.49 million on 428 screens and rose a spot to fourth in Italy with $738,000 on 260 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.09 million after two.
- Race was down just two spots to eighth with $5.33 million on 1044 screens in 16 markets for a total of $20.61 million. This is more than enough for the Indian film to be considered a smash hit, and it is on pace to top recent hits like Jodhaa Akbar and is not that far behind the pace of Om Shanti Om.
- Vantage Point opened in a number of smaller markets, which helped mitigate its declines this past weekend. Overall it added $4.99 million on 2268 screens in 41 markets for a total of $61.33 million with openings in all major markets already out of the way.
- The Game Plan returned to the top ten with $4.95 million on 1315 screens in 15 markets for a total of $38.91 million internationally. It opened in Germany with a spry $2.18 million on 404 screens, which was enough for third place. It was even better in Spain where it took second with $1.41 million on 250 screens over the weekend and $1.51 million in total. The film opens in France and Italy next month, but has already made more than some were expecting given the film's target audience and football.
- Meet the Spartans debuted in first place in Spain with an astounding $2.97 million on 314 screens. On the other hand, it collapsed during its second weekend in the U.K. down more than 50% to $1.04 million on 355 screens for a total of $5.05 million after two. Overall the film made $4.65 million on 852 screens in 9 markets for a total of $32.07 million.
- The Kite Runner returned to the charts in 12th place with $4.30 million on 982 screens in 30 markets for a total of $42.03 million. Much of the weekend's numbers came from Italy where the film opened in first place with $2.99 million on 365 screens, but that is not surprising as this is the type of film that generally thrives in Italy.
- Doraemon: Nobita To Midori No Kyojinten grew by 29% this past weekend adding $3.00 million on 344 screens in Japan for a total of $22.93 million.
- Juno fell out of the top ten with $2.91 million on 1273 screens in 24 markets for a total of $70.92 million. Next week it could return to the top ten as it opens in Italy, and even if it doesn't it is still a massive, massive hit.
- His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass opened in China over the weekend and that helped it shoot up to 15th place with $2.84 million on 948 screens in 4 markets for a total of $292.19 million. In China it opened with a fair $1.3 million, but earned $1.51 million on 619 screens in Japan and now has $28.29 million in that market. With holidays there, it could still earn $300 million internationally, or at least come very close.

Overall it added $2.71 million on 847 screens in 6 markets for a still early total of $6.07 million, but it will need better results than it has managed so far if it wants to turn its run around.
- Chasseurs de Dragons, which means Chasers of Dragons, opened in second place in France with $1.80 million on 406 screens over the weekend. Overall it made $2.61 million on 823 screens in 4 markets for a total of $3.54 million.

This is a major milestone for the film, which was already a smash hit.
- Awake entered the charts in 22nd place with $2.23 million on 468 screens in 6 markets for a early international total of $4.33 million. Most of the weekend numbers came from South Korea where it opened in first place with $1.43 million on 275 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.66 million. - No Country For Old Men fell 14 places to 25th with $2.07 million on 1137 screens in 44 markets for a total of $78.61 million.
- The Bank Job returned to the charts in 26th place with $1.78 million on 397 screens in 5 markets for a still early total of $9.28 million. Doomsday placed 8th there with $859,000 on 250 screens there and earned $1.23 million on 324 screens over the weekend and $1.42 million overall.
