Per Theater Chart: Tangerine Has Sweet Start

July 14th, 2015

Tangerine

The $10,000 club was busier that it was last week with four films earning a per theater average of more than $10,000. This includes the overall number one film, Minions, which earned an average of $26,905 in over 4,000 theaters. The best limited release was Tangerine with an average $15,171 in four theaters. I thought this might be a little too niche to find a large audience, but perhaps I was wrong. Up next is Baahubali: The Beginning, which was also a surprise hit with an average of $13,559 in 236 theaters. It is very rare for a Bollywood film to do that well. The final film in the $10,000 club was Do I Sound Gay? with $11,000 in its lone theater. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for March 31st, 2015

March 30th, 2015

This week on the home market is another week that is good on top, but shallow in terms of depth. The number one film of the week is Interstellar which is worth checking out, but not Pick of the Week material. There are a quartet of Pick of the Week contenders, including two limited releases (The Imitation Game - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray and Wild - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray) and two TV on DVD releases (VEEP: Season 3 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray and Silicon Valley: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray). Of these four, I went with Veep as the Pick of the Week. More...

Per Theater Chart: A Little Magic at the Box Office

July 29th, 2014

Magic in the Moonlight poster

Magic in the Moonlight led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $24,241 in 17 theaters, which is great for most films, but not as strong as some of Woody Allen's more recent releases. Arguably, Boyhood's weekend was much stronger, as it earned an average of $16,466 in 107 theaters. At this point, I'm not sure how long it will last in theaters, but it has already earned at least a measure of mainstream success. The overall number one film, Lucy, was the only other film in the $10,000 club with an average of $13,835. More...

Per Theater Chart: Coming of Age

July 15th, 2014

Boyhood poster

After a weekend with no films in the $10,000 club, this weekend we had the second best per theater average for the year. Boyhood earned nearly $400,000 in just five theaters for an average of $77,524. This is the second best per theater average for the year; only The Grand Budapest Hotel opened with a better average. The overall box office leader, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, was next with an average of $18,304 in nearly 4,000 theaters. More...

Per Theater Chart: Putting Thought in the Per Theater Chart

June 24th, 2014

Think Like a Man Too poster

There were three films in the $10,000 club. They were led by the number one film on the overall chart, Think Like a Man Too, with an average of $13,142 in more than 2,000 theaters. Venus in Fur was close behind with an average of $12,381 in two theaters. The final film in this list was Le Chef with $11,290 in one theater. More...

Per Theater Chart: The Full Picture

May 28th, 2014

Words and Pictures poster

There were only two films in the $10,000 club this weekend. X-Men: Days of Future Past led the way with an average of $22,729 in nearly 4,000 theaters. The only other film was The Dance of Reality with an average of $12,384 in two theaters. However, if one were to include holiday Monday, Words and Pictures would also reach the $10,000 club with an average of $11,544 in ten theaters. More...

Per Theater Chart: Most Limited Releases have a Rough Time

April 30th, 2014

From the Rough poster

It was not a good week on the per theater chart, as only one film topped the $10,000 mark. That film was Locke, which earned an average of $20,252 in four theaters. More...

Per Theater Chart: Under Over Everyone Else

April 8th, 2014

Under the Skin poster

Under the Skin opened surprisingly well with a per theater average of $33,289 in four theaters. This is the second best opening per theater average for any film released in 2014, well back of The Grand Budapest Hotel's record-breaking debut. The only other film in the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which earned an average of $24,130 in nearly 4,000 theaters. More...

Weekend Estimates: Captain America Sets New April Record

April 6th, 2014

Captian America: The Winter Soldier poster

The evolution of the Avengers universe is working out very well for Disney. In November, Thor enjoyed a bump from $65 million to $85 million on opening weekend (and an almost $200 million boost in final worldwide box office). Now, Captain American: Winter Soldier is topping the first movie in its sub-franchise by $30 million or so on opening weekend, with a projected total of $96.2 million, compared to $65 million last time around. With excellent reviews, and a better global launch, we could be looking at another $600 million in the bank before this one is finished. Into the bargain, the film will easily be the record weekend in April, comfortably ahead of the $86 million earned by Fast Five back in 2011. More...

Limited Releases: Afflicting Limited Releases on the Public

April 4th, 2014

Alan Partridge poster

It is a busy week, not only in terms of quantity, but also quality. There are seven films earning 80% positive reviews or higher (at least when I checked last). Some of these, like Afflicted, probably won't find an audience in theaters, because it is just the wrong genre. Others, like The Unknown Known and Watermark, might do well for the genre, but won't find any real measure of mainstream success. On the other hand, Under the Skin and Alan Partridge might find audiences in theaters. More...
