The number of DVDs reaching my door is increasing each week (so are the number of ones that are late, or so it would seem). However, while there was a wide selection, the choice for DVD Pick of the Week was easy: Looney Tunes - Golden Collections - Volume 6. ... And
James Bond - Blu-ray Uber Collection, as well as Casino Royale on Blu-ray. One last note, as has happened more often than not, this week's list is split into two. The second part can be seen here.

New releases were plentiful on the sales chart this week, but after the new number one release, they were not that strong. That new release was Sex and the City, which sold 1.72 million units raising $38.56 million in opening week revenue.

The widest release of next week is The Express, which is an inspirational sports movie, which tend to be predictable players at the box office. It is also the target film on this week's Box Office Prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of The Express.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a mini-poster from How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, a copy of South Of Pico on DVD, Pathology on DVD, Cyborg Solider on DVD, and finally Kill Switch on DVD.

Summer started with a bang, and a whimper... it depends on what you compare it to. Over the weekend, the box office totaled $159 million in ticket sales, which is 75% more than last weekend. However, it is also 16% less than the same weekend last year when Spider-man 3 smashed the record for biggest opening weekend. Compared to expectations, this was a great start; compared to last year, 2008 continues to struggle.

Fool's Gold opened in a trio of major markets and that helped the film climb into sixth place with $4.93 million on 1809 screens in 39 markets for a total of $26.30 million. The film did relatively well in Spain with $1.03 million on 272 screens and in Germany with $934,000 on 254 screens while earning second place in both markets. On the other hand, it bombed in Italy with just $516,000 on 232 screens landing in sixth place. Overall, it was better than the film's average so far, but not nearly enough to recover from its previous troubles. It should hit $100 million worldwide this weekend, but that's not much compared to its domestic run, nor compared to its production budget.

The last weekend before the summer blockbuster rush turned out to be a positive one with only one film missing Thursday's prediction. This helped the overall box office to $91 million over the weekend, although that was 4% less than last weekend. More importantly, it was 17% more than the same weekend last year and that helped reduce 2007's lead over 2008 $2.66 billion to $2.59 billion.

Baby Mama won the weekend with a solid $18.27 million opening, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
That's a little above expectations, and contributed to a strong weekend overall, with a projected total gross for all movies of $91 million -- 17% up from the same weekend last year.
Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay also made a good start with an estimated $14.57 million, which is almost as much as Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle made in its entire theatrical run.

Two comedies with vastly different target audiences are opening this weekend, as is a thriller with perhaps no target audience. None of the new releases look likely to light up the box office charts, especially with the looming release of Iron Man less than a week away. That said, limited expenses and lowered expectations should keep the studios happy, for the most part.

April is not a good month to release a movie. In fact, it is one of the worst months to release a movie, especially late in the month as the May mega-releases begin to loom large on the horizon and you don't have a lot of time to pull in some cash before summer starts and the competition becomes too much to handle. There are, however, a few limited release this month that have a real shot at expanding. Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? could reach $10 million, which would be amazing for a documentary, but it is doubtful it will expand wide.
