International Box Office: Some of the Shine Comes off for Glass

January 31, 2019

Glass

Glass remained in first place with $23.6 million in 55 markets for a two-week total of $89.1 million. It has no new markets this past weekend. In fact, it only has one major market left in its run, China. The film’s biggest market was the U.K. where it remained in first place with $2.55 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $9.06 million. In Russia, t fell 60% to just $2.08 million on 1,381 over the weekend for a two-week total of $8.68 million. The film opened faster than Split did, but it has shorter legs, so it may or may not overtake its predecessor in the end.

Deadpool 2 returned to the top five thanks to Once Upon a Deadpool’s opening in China. The film opened in first place there with $22.18 million over the weekend for a four-day opening of $22.54 million. Maybe making a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 will turn out to be a financial success.

Extreme Job opened in third place internationally, thanks to its first place debut in its native South Korea. It managed $19.39 million on 1,977 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $24.72 million. This is a really impressive result for that market.

Creed II returned to the top five thanks to a quartet of major market openings. Its weekend haul was $14.2 million on 4,545 screens in 45 markets for totals of $76.1 million internationally and $191.5 million worldwide. The film’s best opening came in Italy where it earned first place with $4.3 million on 514 screens. This is a fantastic result for this market. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Germany with $2.2 million on 343 screens. It earned first place in Spain with $2.1 million on 365, but struggled somewhat in Brazil with $1.0 million on 591.

White Snake, which is not the biopic of the 1970s band led by David Coverdale, rose into the top five thanks to an amazing 5% decline in its native China. It added $10.00 million during its second weekend there for a two-week total of $44.33 million.

Bumblebee was pushed out of the top five, but still added $9.0 million in 60 markets for totals of $317.2 million internationally and $438.6 million worldwide. More importantly, it cracked $150 million in China before the weekend and has a running tally of $157.12 million, including $7.08 million this past weekend. This is important, because of Paramount’s deal with Tencent. Both companies will make a profit as part of this deal, so both companies are more likely to work together with the next installment of the Transformers.
