Synopsis

Johanna Morrigan is a bright, quirky, 16-year-old who uses her colorful imagination to regularly escape her humdrum life in Wolverhampton and live out her creative fantasies. Desperate to break free from the overcrowded flat she shares with her four brothers and eccentric parents, she submits an earnestly penned and off-beat music review to a group of self-important indie rock critics at a weekly magazine. Despite being brushed off initially, Johanna clamors to the top of the 90s rock music scene by reinventing herself as Dolly Wilde — a venerable, impossible-to-please music critic with an insatiable lust for fame, fortune, and men. It isn’t long before the rapid pace at which Johanna’s life is changing becomes overwhelming and she runs face-first into a devastatingly real, existential crisis: Is this the type of girl she wants to become? Or does she need to start over and build again from the ground up?

Weekend Wrap-Up: Wretched is a Legitimate Hit

May 26th, 2020

The Wretched

It was Memorial Day long weekend this past weekend, not that this really mattered when it comes to the box office chart. Until the pandemic is no longer a serious concern, holidays won’t have a significant impact at the box office. That said, The Wretched is doing well enough to be considered a legitimate hit, even under normal circumstances. More...

Wretched is the First Pandemic Box Office Hit

May 20th, 2020

The Wretched

We are still adjusting to the new normal when it comes to the weekend box office, and determining what the difference is between a hit and a miss under the circumstances. We can say with a lot of confidence that The Wretched is a hit, as the film has earned just over $300,000 in three weeks, including $91,975 in 21 drive-in theaters this past weekend. This would be a good run for a horror film in limited release under normal circumstances. How to Build a Girl saw its weekend box office and its theater average rise with $32,052 in 9 theaters during its second weekend in theaters for a two-week total of $51,854. This is a disappointment for a limited release, but a strong showing given the Covid-19 outbreak. Additionally, the healthy growth during its second weekend of release could be a sign that films will have longer legs as a result of the pandemic. That’s something to keep in mind in the future. What a Theatrical Hit Looks Like During a Pandemic

May 13th, 2020

How to Build a Girl

For obvious reasons, it has been a while since we have had a column on theater averages. However, we are beginning to actually have some box office numbers to talk about. This past weekend, How to Build a Girl opened with $13,000 in 6 theaters for an average of $2,200. Given the strange times we live in, that prompts the question, is that a good result? More...

VOD Releases: Can New Releases Build an Audience on VOD?

May 8th, 2020

How to Build a Girl

It isn’t a particularly strong week for VOD releases, but there are some films of note. Fire Will Come is the best film, but we are getting mixed signals whether or not it is even coming out. How to Build a Girl is earning much louder buzz and its reviews are certainly good enough for a VOD rental. More...
