Weekend projections: Wild Robot gathers steam through the weekend for strong $35-million debut

September 29th, 2024

A still from the movie The Wild Robot

The Wild Robot is powering through the weekend to record a feisty $35 million, and an easy win at the box office. After slightly disappointing preview numbers, the film’s audience grew by more than 50% from Friday to Saturday (not counting those Thursday previews as part of Friday’s box office total), and Universal expects it to decline 33% on Saturday. Stellar reviews are clearly driving good word of mouth, and it has earned enough on opening weekend to stay in theaters for an extended run. More...

Theater counts: Transformers wins the battle of the robots to become widest release

September 26th, 2024

Transformers: One

After a three-week reign as North America’s widest release, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has finally dropped below 4,000 theaters, making room for last weekend’s newcomer, Transformers One, to edge into the top spot as widest release this weekend. It will barely surpass another debut, The Wild Robot, by just eight locations. This weekend, audiences can look forward to a variety of new wide releases. More...

Megalopolis trailer

September 18th, 2024

Francis Ford Coppola’s fantastical drama, starring Adam Driver, opens in theaters September 27. Full movie details.

A Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves. More...

Home Market Releases for April 25th, 2017

April 25th, 2017

Tanpopo

We are entering the worst time of year for the home market. The number of Oscar contenders have nearly dried up and there are more bombs than box office hits. As for the best of the new releases, The Criterion Collection release for Tampopo is the best and the only real choice for Pick of the Week. Meanwhile, the Mean Dreams DVD earns Puck of the Week, for the best Canadian release of the week. More...

2012 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part III

December 15th, 2012

We are getting closer and closer to Christmas and we are getting to the crunch time for gift shopping. After checking out first run releases and franchise box sets in Part I and TV on DVD releases in Part II, this week we look at limited releases, classics, and foreign films. Some are pretty obvious choices, as we had a few limited releases that broke into the mainstream during their theatrical releases, but there are also a few more films that slipped beneath the radar the last time around. The biggest of these is... More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 4th, 2012

December 4th, 2012

It is an awesome week for new releases on the home market. Not only is one of the biggest hits of all time coming out, but there are a number of other releases that are Pick of the Week contenders. The Dark Knight Rises, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Finding Nemo, Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Two, My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: Season One, Brazil, Francis Ford Coppola: 5-Film Collection - Blu-ray, and others. In the end, I went with Finding Nemo: 3D Combo Pack, but it really is an excellent week for prime releases. More...
