Theater counts: Madame Web holds off a flurry of newcomers to remain widest release

February 22nd, 2024

Madame Web

Despite taking a backseat at the box office to Bob Marley: One Love during its opening frame, Madame Web once again finds itself as the widest release in North America this weekend, as it retains (mostly by contractual obligation) its opening count of 4,013 theaters. The superhero film starring Dakota Johnson has earned over $28 million in its first eight days, a figure that has been doubled by One Love, which opened alongside Madame Web on Valentine’s Day. This week witnesses three new wide releases, accompanied by a pandemic era film making its way back into cinemas. More...

September Preview: Tenet Heads a Month with a Wide Release Planned Every Weekend

September 1st, 2020

Tenet

We finally had some wide releases in August, and things went well, relatively speaking. Antebellum was pulled from the schedule at the last minute, leaving Unhinged as the only semi-wide release for the weekend of August 21, and that helped it open better than anticipated with $4 million. Then The New Mutants had the best opening since the pandemic first caused theaters to close, with $7 million last weekend.

That record won’t last long as Tenet is now playing in US theaters, officially as an “Early Access” release on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, then “In Theaters” (which seems to be basically the same thing, only more so) from Thursday. It should outpace The New Mutants’ running tally, and maybe as early as its opening day. Not only will it have the biggest opening in months, it should stay in first place for the entire month, mainly due to a lack of competition. Three other films are getting wide releases, and each on their own weekend, so there’s no competition between them; however, that’s the end of the good news as the buzz for all three films is quiet. In fact, the buzz for Antebellum is in some ways louder, and that will be going direct to Apple TV on September 18.

Here’s the complete rundown of major movies coming to theaters this month. More...

July Preview: When Will We Next See a Wide Release?

July 1st, 2020

Time until next wide release

Will there be a new wide theatrical release in July? Just over two weeks ago, the answer to that question looked like it might be yes. NATO, the North American Theater Owners trade association, said they expected about 90% of theaters would re-open by the time Tenet was set to debut on July 17. Things have changed since then, to say the least.

The overly-optimistic predictions came before the United States topped 40,000 newly-detected COVID-19 cases in a single day for multiple days in a row. Now that we’re at the beginning of July, only one film is still scheduled to open wide this month, Unhinged, that’s hanging on by a thread. That prompts the question, when can we realistically expect to see a new wide release?

Let’s look at the data… More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Shine a Light on Dark Releases

November 22nd, 2019

Dark Waters

Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Blockers

July 2nd, 2018

Blockers

Blockers is a teenage sex comedy with two main differences. Firstly, the teens trying to lose their virginity are girls, not boys. Secondly, the main characters are their parents, who are trying to stop them. Can these two changes revive a tired genre? Or is there only so much you can do with this type of film? More...

2018 Preview: April

April 1st, 2018

Avengers: Infinity War

Well, March has ended and it was a very disappointing month. Black Panther made more than any of the new releases did. The only potential big hit that didn’t miss expectations was Ready Player One. Because of this, 2018 lost its lead over 2017 and is now over $100 million behind last year’s pace. April is usually a terrible month, because it is a dumping ground, especially late in the month. No studio wants to compete with the first monster hit of the Summer. This year, the first monster hit of the summer, Avengers: Infinity War, opens in April. It will make more during its opening weekend than any other April release will make in total. It might make more opening day than any other April release will make in total. The only film that has a real chance to earn more than $100 million is Rampage, a video game adaptation. Last April, The Fate of the Furious earned more than $1.2 billion worldwide, but “only” earned $225.76 million of that domestically. Infinity War should earn more than that opening weekend. The second biggest hit of last April was Smurfs: The Lost Village and Going in Style, both of which earned $45.02 million. If 2018 doesn’t retake the lead by the end of the month, then 2018 is in trouble at the box office. More...
