Theater counts: Inside Out 2 remains widest release as business heats up

Inside Out 2 has been dominating the domestic box office since its June 14 release. It’s set to surpass Frozen’s $401 million mark this Thursday, entering the top 10 highest grossing animated films of all time. Currently, it has earned $400.7 million domestically and $434.7 million internationally, totaling $835.4 million globally. With 4,440 theaters still showing the film, it’s poised to join the billion dollar club soon, despite facing fierce competition from this weekend’s new releases.

Starting out in 3,707 locations this week is another franchise film in the way of the apocalyptic-horror film, A Quiet Place: Day One. The Michael Sarnoski directed film is the third in the A Quiet Place franchise, which has scored $631.53 million in worldwide box office, beginning in 2018. The latest feature is a prequel film and stars Lupita Nyong’o, and Joseph Quinn, based on the story from Sarnoski and John Krasinski.

Also opening in wide release this week is the first of two chapters being released this year of Kevin Costner’s western saga, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1. Directed and headlined by Costner, the movie features an enormous ensemble cast, including Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, and Luke Wilson, just to name a few. Beginning its run in 3,334 cinemas, the film explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears, of many. The second chapter is scheduled for release on August 16, 2024.

Making its theatrical debut this week is the Japanese anime feature, Blue Lock The Movie -Episode Nagi-. Arriving in 857 North American theaters, the film is a spinoff story that highlights the less than motivated high schooler, Nagi Seishiro, who, after a classmate notices his hidden soccer skills, is motivated to share is outstanding talent.

Rounding out the top five widest releases this weekend is Bad Boys: Ride or Die, losing 469 locations this week, although still widely available in 3,312 movie houses. The fifth-widest release is last week’s newcomer The Bikeriders, adding 50 locations for a total of 2,692 venues. The latter has placed second at the domestic box office throughout the week and currently holds a six-day North American total of $12.38 million.

Looking ahead to next week we see the release of another animated sequel as Despicable Me 4 makes its way into theaters on Wednesday, in time for the Fourth of July holiday. On Friday, the 1980’s set horror flick, MaXXXine becomes available to North American audiences. We will update the counts for these films throughout the week as they arrive.
