Streaming Releases: Big Stars Coming to a Screen Near You

July 10, 2020

Greyhound

The first week of the month is usually the busiest for streaming services, so it is no surprise that this week is slower than last week. There are a few interesting items on this week’s list though, and it’s a sign of the times that some of the biggest names at the box office are in leading roles. Greyhound, the World War II action movie starring Tom Hanks, is the standout release of the weekend, and Charlize Theron, Andy Samberg, and Cate Blanchett all have new movies or shows debuting.

Movies:

Greyhound
Apple TV+
In the early days of WW II, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by captain Ernest Krause, in his first command of a U.S. destroyer, crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats. This feels like an Oscar-bait movie. Its reviews are not Oscar-worthy, but it could have gotten enough Awards Season buzz to at least do well at the box office. Maybe it will convince people to subscribe to Apple TV+.

The Old Guard
Netflix
Four undying warriors who’ve secretly protected humanity for centuries become targeted for their mysterious powers just as they discover a new immortal. This film has heavyweight star power, led by Charlize Theron, and is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights), and its reviews are overwhelmingly, if not enthusiastically, positive.

Palm Springs
Hulu
When carefree Nyles and reluctant maid of honor Sarah have a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding, things get complicated the next morning when they find themselves unable to escape the venue, themselves, or each other. This film is earning some of the best reviews of the week, and they are enthusiastically positive. It’s the kind of film that could become a sleeper hit at the box office under normal circumstances. Hopefully it will at least find an audience on Hulu.

Other Movies

Jim Jefferies: Intolerant - Netflix
Mucho Mucho Amor - Netflix

TV Shows:

Japan Sinks: 2020 - Season One
Netflix
An anime series based on the 1973 disaster novel of the same name. The reviews are mostly positive. If you are intro this genre, it is worth checking out, but not everyone who watches the first episode will stick around until the end.

Stateless: Season One
Netflix
Four strangers—a woman on the run, a brave refugee, a driven bureaucrat and a struggling dad—intersect at an Australian immigration detention center. This TV series is co-created by and co-stars Cate Blanchett. That should convince more than a few people that it is at least worth checking out, and the reviews are good enough that it they could stick around for the whole series.

Other TV Shows:

Dating Around: Brazil - Season One - Netflix
Down to Earth with Zac Efron: Season One - Netflix
Little Voice: Season One - Apple TV+
