DEG Watched At Home Chart: Bad Boys Continues Sony’s Good Year
April 30, 2020
Bad Boys for Life rose to first place on this week’s DEG watched at home chart, thanks to its release on DVD and Blu-ray. This wasn’t Sony’s only entry in the in the top five. In fact, the studio was tied with Disney / Fox with five in the top twenty.
It was recently reported that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will earn Disney $300 million in profit, and it is still considered a disappointment. Some of that profit is coming from the home market, where it finished in second place on this week’s chart.
The only new entry in the top five was The Gentlemen, which earned third place, up from seventh last week. The film wasn’t a monster hit at the box office, but it did well enough for its $22 million budget to guarantee a profit. Because of this, any money the studio earns from its home market run is pure gravy on an already profitable run.
Sonic the Hedgehog slipped a spot to fourth on the chart this week, which should keep Paramount very happy. I assume they are already working on a Sonic Cinematic Universe at this point. Someone at the studio is likely already looking into other video game properties to turn into franchises as well.
Jumanji: The Next Level remained locked in fifth place. The film was the tenth-biggest worldwide hit released in 2019 and it is continuing this strength on the home market.
Looking further down the list we find Underwater rising to eighth place, up five spots from last week. The film was an expensive bomb in theaters, in part because it was made by Fox and Disney didn’t seem to care much if it made any money or not. Its reviews are fine for a home market rental, so it could stick around a while, especially with no new major releases to overtake it.
Like a Boss opened in 14th place, just ahead of the debut of Ip Man 4: The Finale. The only other new release to chart was Fantasy Island, which landed in 18th place.
