International Box Office: Ad Astra Shines on Top of the Chart

Ad Astra spent a second weekend on top of the international box office earning $18.0 million in 50 markets for totals of $53.5 million internationally and $88.9 million worldwide. The film had an elite opening in Russia with $3.16 million on 1,337 screens, earning first place in the process. On the other hand, it failed to crack $1 million during its debuts in both Brazil ($900,000) and Italy ($898,000).

It: Chapter Two remained in second place with $11.9 million on 8,960 screens in 78 markets for totals of $224.9 million internationally and $418.6 million worldwide. The film is coasting on holdovers and won’t open in another major market till November when it debuts in Japan.

Downton Abbey rose to third place with $10.7 million in 36 markets for totals of $49.3 million internationally and $107.7 million worldwide. The film’s only million dollar opening came in France, where it earned fourth place with $1.61 million on 310 screens. On the other hand, the film was down just 16% in the U.K. earning $3.29 million on 738 screens over the weekend for a total of $23.40 million after three weeks of release. The film held on even better in Germany, down just 11% to $1.11 million over the weekend for a total of $2.90 million after two weeks of release.

Rambo: Last Blood climbed a spot to fourth with $9.48 million in 44 markets for totals of $23.59 million internationally and $56.76 million worldwide.

Abominable rounded out the top five with $8.9 million in 30 markets for an early international total of $10.3 million. This includes a pair of first place openings in Mexico ($2.06 million on 905 screens) and in Brazil ($1.45 million on 575). The film has a staggered opening and doesn’t finish its international run until nearly the middle of next year.

The Captain just missed the top five with $8.3 million over the weekend; however, it was playing in a special engagement on Saturday only, so when it gets its first full weekend of release, it will rocket up the chart. Likewise, The Climbers earned $6 million during its special engagement on Saturday.
