Friday Estimates: Abominable Grows on its Opening Day
September 28, 2019
Abominable bounced back a bit during Friday to earn $5.69 million. This is still behind Smallfoot’s opening Friday, but it is better than its previews. This is strong evidence that the film’s reviews and its A rating from CinemaScore is already having a positive effect. $20 million is now much more likely than it was yesterday at this time, while with a little luck, it will match our $22 million prediction.
Downton Abbey fell faster than I would have liked, down 68% from its opening Friday with $4.38 million. It will bounce back over the rest of the weekend and could earn as much as $15 million, which is still a good result. It won’t be able to avoid a 50% decline, on the other hand.
Hustlers is pulling away in third place after earning $3.66 million on Friday, which puts it on pace for more than $11 million over the weekend. The film will have no trouble becoming a $100 million hit and it will break even early in its home market run, even if it fails to find an audience internationally.
Ad Astra landed in fourth place, for now, with $2.99 million on Friday. It should stay ahead of It: Chapter Two, but that’s not a guarantee. The film should still match our predictions with just over $10 million over the full weekend.
It: Chapter Two was right behind with $2.85 million on Friday, putting it on pace for just under $10 million over the full weekend. This is close enough to Ad Astra that I wouldn’t be surprised if the two films switched places over the weekend.
This leaves Rambo: Last Blood on the outside in sixth place with $2.34 million on Friday, putting it on pace for between $8 million and $9 million over the full weekend. This isn’t a great result, but it isn’t terrible either.
Judy was able to earn seventh place with $900,000 on Friday. The Oscar-hopeful is earning some of the best reviews of the weekend, although not truly Oscar-worthy. I still think Renée Zellweger has a chance at Oscar glory, but I don’t think the film will be one of the big winners on Oscar night.
