International Box Office: Ad Astra is the Real Star of the International Chart
September 26, 2019
Last week, the international box office was dominated by international releases with six of the top seven films coming from overseas. This week, there is only four films that earned more than $10 million and only one of them wasn’t a Hollywood release. Ad Astra led the way earning $26 million in 44 markets during its first weekend of release. The film’s biggest market was the U.K., where it opened in second place with $2.83 million in 616 theaters. It did as well in South Korea with $2.32 million on 853 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.68 million. The film also cracked $2 million in France ($2.7 million) and Japan ($2.2 million). The film has yet to open in several major markets, so it is far from done. That said, it was an expensive movie to make and while it is doing better internationally, it isn’t doing well enough to break even any time soon.
It: Chapter Two was close behind with $21.3 million on 13,858 screens in 78 markets for totals of $206.1 internationally and $385.0 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend; in fact, its next major opening doesn’t come till November when it debuts in Japan. The film will have no trouble getting to $400 million worldwide before the end of September, which is already enough to break even, so the film will be profitable by a significant margin before it reaches the home market.
Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood rose to third place with $10.94 million on 5,048 screens in 81 markets for totals of $204.85 million internationally and $343.02 million worldwide. This includes a first place debut in Italy, where it made $5.09 million on 801 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $6.06 million.
Downton Abbey was right behind with $10.2 million in 33 markets for totals of $31.0 million internationally and $62.0 million worldwide. The film’s biggest new market was Germany, where it earned $1.24 million in 415 theaters. Unfortunately, that was the only market where it opened with more than $1 million. Fortunately, it earned $4.08 million in 734 theaters in the U.K. for a two-week total of $16.06 million in its native market.
Rambo: Last Blood rounded out the top five with $9.11 million in 34 markets over the weekend for an opening of $9.27 million.
