Theater Counts (Updated): King Arthur Runs into Guardians Buzzsaw
May 11, 2017
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword will open in 3,702 theaters this weekend, according to Warner Bros.’ Thursday figures. That’s a respectable figure, but nothing like the 4,347 theaters that will continue to play Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. The battle at the box office likely won’t be close this weekend, even if Guardians drops precipitously from its $146.5 million debut.
Amy Schumer/Goldie Hawn comedy Snatched has a good shot at second place, and will be playing in an impressive 3,501 theaters. Roadside Attractions’s The Wall is starting out more strategically in 541 locations. That kind of non-saturation-level nationwide rollout can land with a thud, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for how that one performs.
Looking ahead to next weekend, Fox is putting all its chips on the table, with the studio releasing Alien: Covenant and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul to go with their launch of Snatched this weekend. Alien will play in approximately 3,600 theaters, while Diary opens in 2,900. Everything, Everything gets 2,800 venues for Warner Bros.
Updated Friday morning: Revised Universal figures and Stefan Zweig theater count.
