Theater Averages: The Jungle Book Meddles with the Limited Releases

The Meddler

It wasn't a great week for new limited releases, which left a holdover / wide release on top of the theater average chart. The Jungle Book led the way with an average of $15,278. The only other film in the $10,000 was The Meddler, which opened with an average of $14,256 in four theaters.

The rest of the new limited releases ranged from okay to awful. How to Let Go and I'm not typing this whole name out was the best of the rest with $6,750 in one theater over the weekend for a five-day total of $13,775. That's not great, but it's not bad for a documentary. Tale of Tales only managed an average of $4,436 in two theaters, but this film should find a larger audience on the home market. Compadres was one of the widest limited releases this weekend, but it was also the best with an average of $3,797. Hockney was close behind with $3,421 in four theaters. A Hologram for the King struggled with an average of $2,839 in 401 theaters. It's not going to expand significantly, if at all, but it likely won't disappear this coming weekend either. Men and Chicken missed the Mendoza Line with an average of just $1,327 in two theaters. This film is too out there to find an audience, even in the art house circuit. Elvis and Nixon was close behind with an average of $1,224 in 381 theaters. It will likely see a drastic cut in its theater count this weekend. Sworn Virgins only managed $830 in its lone theater, making it the weakest of the limited releases we have numbers for.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Miles Ahead expanded significantly and that helped it get to $1 million over the weekend. It will likely get to $2 million shortly, but that's as far as it will go.
  • A Hologram for the King opened with more than $1 million and should have no trouble getting to $2 million. I'm not sure it will get to $3 million.
  • Compadres also opened with more than $1 million, but its long-term chances are better.
  • Everybody Wants Some expanded significantly, but while that helped it get to $2 million, its theater average really low, so it will quickly lose theaters.
