International Box Office: The Force Awakens Likely Finishes its First Place run with $47.3 Million
January 21, 2016
Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned first place on the international chart with $47.3 million over the weekend for totals of $1.012 billion internationally for a worldwide total of $1.865 billion. It became the third film released in 2015 to hit $1 billion internationally and the fifth film of All-Time to do so. However, without any more market lefts to open in, there is a good chance the film will fade away before catching up to Furious 7, meaning there will be no "undisputed" box office champion this year. This won't affect the bottom-line, but it will be a bragging point for Furious 7. As for individual markets, the film earned $44.04 million in China, for the full week, for a nine-day total of $97.46 million.
The Revenant remained in second place with $31.5 million in 25 markets internationally for a still early total of $58.6 million. It opened in first place in the U.K. with $7.39 million in 589 theaters. It also earned top spot in South Korea with $4.70 million on 966 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.50 million. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Italy with $3.24 million on 459.
Boonie Bears III is the second theatrical release and the third movie based on the popular Chinese kids cartoon. It earned first place in China during its opening day with $8.59 million, topping Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It remained in first place on Sunday for a two-day opening weekend of $16.18 million while its total was $20.07 million including previews.
Creed made its international debut in fourth place with $14.2 million in 34 markets for an early international total of $28.7 million. The film's biggest market was France, where it managed $3.96 million on 450 screens. While it earned a pair of third place results in the U.K. with $3.14 million in 482 theaters and in Italy with $2.82 million on 362 screens.
Royal Treasure debuted in third place in China and fifth place internationally with $11.91 million.
The Fifth Wave missed the top five earning seventh place with $8.2 million in 30 markets. However, its the target film in this week's Box Office Prediction Contest, this might be important for readers. It only managed fourth place in both Australia ($1.52 million on 195 screens) and in Germany ($1.23 million on 465). On a more pleasant note, it earned first place in a number of South Asian markets, including Malaysia where it earned $1.13 million on 254.
