Home Market Releases for October 20th, 2015
October 20, 2015
It is a shallow week on the home market. The number one release is Jurassic World, which is one of the biggest hits of all time. The second biggest release according to Amazon.com is the Back to the Future Box Set. There's mostly filler by the time you get to the second page of new releases. As for the best release on this week's list, I'm going old school. ... Really, really old school. Diary of a Lost Girl is 86 years old, but the Blu-ray is Pick of the Week.

The first movie is a classic, but the other two are merely good. The overall package is worth picking up, but there's another problem: Choice overload. There's the Limited Edition Box Set, Documentary, and Animated Series. I didn't even know there was an animated series. I think the regular Blu-ray release is the only one you need.
The only Christmas release this week that is worth picking up is the original How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but it is easily worth it. In fact, it would be a Pick of the Week contender, but I have a rule about no Christmas releases before Halloween. On a side note, there are a ton of VOD Christmas releases this week, including VOD Yule Log and a VOD Christmas Tree. I'm at a loss for words.
Diary of a Lost Girl - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray

A silent film about a naive young lady who is taken advantage of and ends up pregnant. Her family wants her to marry the father, but when she refuses, her child is taken away and she is forced to stay in a home for wayward women. The film's reviews are excellent and fans of silent films should pick it up.
I mentioned a little while ago that Anime sales were collapsing. While that's true of the series being imported from Japan, Anime movies are actually growing in popularity. For instance, this movie made $8 million in theaters. That's amazing. That's also why it is earning a regular edition release and a special limited edition release.
This is one of the best-selling new releases of the week, according to Amazon.com. That's how shallow the new releases are this week.

This is the biggest hit of the year and one of the biggest hits of all time. However, its reviews were not that good. In fact, I've heard a couple of critics I generally trust saying it was the worst $100 million hit of the summer. I'm hoping to get a screener so I can judge for myself, but just looking at the reviews suggests it did over-perform at the box office and it isn't quite a Pick of the Week contender. Also coming out this week is a DVD only box set and 3D Blu-ray box set.
The final season of this show. The show never really dipped in quality, so fans can finally complete their set without settling for substandard episodes.

I don't know what to say about this show. I've never seen it and I really thought it was a joke for a while. The reviews are good, but that's all I can say.
This show was frustrating to watch, because it had a lot of great elements, but the plots were too repetitive with Nurse Jackie repeating the same mistakes over and over again. This season is the final season. Did they finally fix that mistake? Or was the show the same mess it was the past few seasons? Read our review for my opinion.
Not the best horror film starring Vincent Price, but even mediocre Vincent Price is better than a lot of other horror options.
I think Demon Knight was underrated. Bordello of Blood was not.

One of the best releases on this week's list, but it still barely managed 80% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Extras include audio commentary track, behind-the-scenes, deleted scenes, etc. It is worth picking up, but not a contender for Pick of the Week.
Just the two TV on DVD Megasets this week. My Favorite Martian has the advantage when it comes to nostalgia.
An 8-disc, 22-hour collection of Don Rickles' TV specials, interviews, guest appearances, etc.

This film started out as a found footage film, but that aspect was mostly dropped in script development. However, the aura of found footage might have killed its box office chances. Was it as bad as its box office performance? Check out our review to find out.
Trainwreck is the best film on this list, but I really think buying it is the better choice. On the other hand, Extraordinary Tales might be a good rental. It's an animated anthology based on five Edgar Allen Poe stories.
The Wolfpack - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray

A documentary about a group of brothers living in poverty in New York City who use their love of cinema as an escape. The reviews are great and the film earned more than $1 million at the box office, which is fantastic for a documentary. Extras include interviews, the brothers' trip to the premiere, and even some of their short films. It is worth picking up and even a Contender for Pick of the Week.

A film set in a post-apocalyptic world, but not your typical post-apocalypse film. It deals with two people who meet who may be the last people on Earth. It is a character drama and not a Sci-fi action film. Is it worth checking out? And is the Blu-ray worth picking up? Read our review to find out.
