Village's Population Grows

September 14, 2004

The Village again was the weekend champ in the international box office with $15.3 million on nearly 3,500 screens in 31 markets. Highlights for the weekend include and impressive debut in Germany at $5.5 million and a less spectacular $3.1 million in Japan. The film also suffered a 55% drop-off in its second weekend in Australia while it held up much better in Brazil. So far the film has earned $63.2 million internationally and is well on its way to matching its $112 million domestic total.

The Terminal Jumped into the top five thanks to excellent holdovers in the U.K. (where it was off just 16%) and Italy, (where it was off 18%.) Unfortunately, its opening were less impressive: $1.7 million in Spain, $912 thousand in Australia, among others. Overall the film took it $9.5 million on 1,850 screens in 26 markets raising its totals to $24.5 million internationally and over $100 million worldwide.

The Bourne Supremacy continued its run in the top five thanks to number one openings in France, Holland and Belgium. Overall the film took in $7.7 million on 1,638 screens in 19 markets. Internationally the film has earned $45 million so far, pushing its worldwide total above $200 million.

Even though Resident Evil: Apocalypse opened in just one international market during the past weekend, but it was a $5.9 million opening in Japan, (including previews.) That was almost 60% bigger than the original's debut there and enough for the film to finish fourth on the international charts.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story opened first in Australia with $1.8 million, second in Spain with $1.7 million and was third during its third weekend in the U.K. with $1.8 million. Overall the film earned $5.7 million and was able to take fifth place. Other highlights on the international scene include:

  • Open Water had an impressive $3.6 million opening in the U.K., much better than its performance in either France or Spain.
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban opened with $1.8 million in Greece, $1.2 million in most of China, (the film opens next week in Beijing.) Add in the just under $1 million it earned in the rest of the markets it is currently still playing in and its weekend total of $3.9 million. So far the film has earned $532.3 million internationally, 8th on the all time charts.
  • 13 Going on 30 earned $1.6 million in its German debut. That's very impressive when compared to its results in other non-English speaking markets. The film earned $1 million in its second weekend in Australia, (down just 27%) and $3.5 million for the weekend. The film is now just shy of $30 million internationally.
  • Thanks to having a French director, Catwoman had its best opening in the international marketplace with $2.2 million in France. Even so, its $3.3 million for the weekend and $25.1 million in 28 markets is not enough given its massive production budget.
  • Fahrenheit 9/11 saw a major milestone this weekend as it reached $203 million worldwide. This film is still doing strong business in many markets including $1.2 million in Italy, $526,000 in Mexico and $500,000 in Japan for a weekend total of just over $3 million.
  • Shrek 2 is showing excellent legs in Scandinavia dropping less than 20% in Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Overall it earned $2.7 million on 1,900 screens in 23 markets raising its total to $427.4 million.
  • After an impressive debut in Japan last week, Van Helsing dropped 54% to just $2.6 million this week. That is an absolute massive decrease for that market.
  • Chronicles of Riddick saw huge drops in almost all markets it is still playing in. It was down 60% in Austria, 57% in Germany, 54% in the U.K. and 53% in Spain. Overall the film took in $2.5 million on 1500 screens in 20 markets for a $49.5 million international total.
  • Alien vs. Predator opened in first place in five markets led by its $1.4 million in Mexico and $860,000 in Hong Kong.
  • Hellboy dropped 40% during its second weekend in the U.K. while it opened with $584,000 in Russia. Those two results were the majority of the film's $1.9 million weekend haul. So far the film has taken in $24.5 million in 27 markets so far.
  • Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid earned $506 thousand in Malaysia, including previews. But the film has been unable to maintain any of its strong starts so far resulting in a $1.7 million weekend and a $10.7 million international total.
  • With the kidnappings in Iraq, Man on Fire is being really hurt internationally. This weekend it managed only $650,000 in Italy, $463,000 in Russia and $269,000 in Taiwan.
  • There were no new openings this weekend for Mean Girls, but the film continues earn better than expected for its genre. This week it earned $1.2 million on 700 screens in 19 markets for a $37.1 million international total.
  • Starsky and Hutch is showing strong legs taking in $1.2 million in its third weekend in Italy.
  • Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy was a big hit domestically earning more than $84 million on a production budget of just $25 million. However, if its first excursion into international waters is any indication, it is really going to suffer. The film could only pull in $1 million in the U.K., just good enough for fifth place there, and an abysmal $23 thousand in Mexico.
  • I, Robot opened first in both Poland and Hungary with a combined $550 thousand. That was enough to push its international total past $150 million.
  • Super Size Me debuted with $500 thousand in the U.K. on just 82 screens, for the second best per screen average in the top ten.
  • A Cinderella Story earnings climbed to $5.7 million in the U.K.
On a strange note, both Garfield and King Arthur finished in the top five last week but no figures were available for them this week. I'll try and fill in the blanks next week.
