Fockers Finish First, Frequently

2005 got off to a slow start and was off 19% from last weekend and 16% from the first weekend of 2004. This despite the one new release beating all expectations. Next weekend should really turn things around, on the other hand.

Still showing better legs than its reviews would indicate is Meet the Fockers. The film finished first for the third weekend in a row again beating expectations with $28.5 million. So far the film has brought in $204 million and is showing little signs of slowing down.

Good news, bad news situation. Michael Keaton is a great actor, White Noise is the best non-Batman opening of his career, and the film that pushed his total box office over $1 billion. On the other hand, it's a really bad movie and movies this bad don't deserve to take in $24.1 million on opening weekend.

The Aviator missed expectations by nearly $7,500 with $7,492,647, good enough for third place. However, the film will likely go down as a costly mistake for the studio.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events dropped from second to fourth place, earning another $7.4 million this past weekend. It also became the 22nd film released in 2004 to make $100 million.

Rounding out the top five was Fat Albert with $5.7 million, just ahead of the sixth place film, Ocean's Twelve, which took in $5.3 million.
