Indy Opens in 4,260 Theaters -- 3rd Widest of All Time
May 21, 2008
Paramount announced the final theater count for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull this afternoon: a heroic 4,260.
That makes the movie the 3rd widest release of all time behind the gargantuan release of Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End last year (4,362 theaters) and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which opened in 4,285 theaters.
What does this tell us about the likely opening for Indiana Jones?
Not much.
Pirates opened with $114 million, Potter opened on a Wednesday, and made $77 million over the three-day Friday-Sunday part of the weekend, while Spider-Man 3 opened in almost exactly the same number of theaters (4,252), and walked away with a three day total of $151 million.
We can confidently predict that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be somewhere between $77 million and $151 million... beyond that, we'll have to wait until we get some box office tracking reports on Thursday evening or Friday morning.
