2014 - Awards Season: Golden Globes - Winners

We are still waiting for the DGA nominations to be announced, but we had the first major awards show on Sunday. The Golden Globes winners were announced Sunday night and while there were not a lot of surprises, there are some things worth talking about. Leading the way with three wins was Boyhood, while Birdman and The Theory of Everything each picked up a pair of wins.

Notes and Reactions...

• Boyhood won the evening with three awards, including Best Drama, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress. It might not be the big winner on Oscar night, but it very unlikely it will go home empty-handed.
• The Grand Budapest Hotel beat out Birdman for Best Comedy or Musical. This is a surprise, although I guess one could argue Birdman is the better movie, but isn't the better comedy.
• When it comes to the six acting categories, there were no overwhelming favorites in any of them, except for Michael Keaton for Birdman, who was widely seen as the favorite. Because of this, it is hard to say if any of these results are upsets or not. After the Golden Globes, the winners' chances at Oscar glory have improved.
• How to Train Your Dragon 2 won over
• Big Hero 6 and The LEGO Movie. Some people took that as a major upset. When the reviews are 92% positive vs. 88% and 96% positive reviews, you can't really call anyone of them winning being a big upset.
• Hey, Selma wasn't shutout. The film's performance with Awards Season voters has been really poor compared to its 99% positive reviews.
