Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

DVD Sales: Holiday Wrap-Up

January 20th, 2010

Thanks to the holidays, DVD sales numbers were not reported on our usual schedule, but next week we should be back to normal, so it's a perfect time to wrap up some of the interesting notes from over the holidays.

The week after Black Friday saw the release of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and Terminator Salvation, neither of which matched expectations, although made up for their poor DVD performance somewhat by selling well on Blu-ray. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 15th, 2009

December 15th, 2009

This is the last full week before Christmas, so in many ways this is the last chance studios have to release their top properties. And you can tell. There are four releases that are prime candidates for the DVD Pick of the Week, including two $100 million hits (Inglourious Basterds and The Hangover) and two TV on DVD releases (Robot Chicken and Star Trek - The Original Series). All have their strengths and weaknesses, but if I were forced to choose just one, it would be Inglourious Basterds on Blu-ray. On the other hand, all four are joining my collection, plus several others coming out this week. More...

International Details - Foreign Films are not Chicken

December 13th, 2009

A number of international releases reached the top 30 this week, including Zweiohrkuken, a.k.a. The Chicken With Two Ears, from Germany, which placed sixth with $10.72 million on 839 screens in 3 markets. It made $9.39 million on 714 screens in its native market, which was easily enough for first place and more than twice what the original,Keinohrhasen, a.k.a., No Ear Hare, opened with in 2007. Keinohrhasen went on to earn $74 million worldwide, of which more than $60 million was earned in Germany. However, I don't think this film will have the same legs. That said, since it was written, directed, and stars Til Schweiger who was recently in Inglourious Basterds, it could earn see releases in more markets. More...

International Details: Assassin Takes on the Competition

December 6th, 2009

Ninja Assassin started its international run in sixth place with $5.30 million on 665 screens in 9 markets over the weekend for a total of $5.97 million. Most of those markets were in Asia, including South Korea, where it opened in second place with $2.97 million on 401 screens over the weekend and $3.55 million in total. More...

International Details - 51 Goes Planetwide

November 29th, 2009

Planet 51 started its international run in a limited fashion, but was only a little better than its domestic opening. Its biggest market was Russia, where it placed fourth with $1.49 million on 344 screens, which is on par with its opening here, perhaps a little bit stronger. The film also placed fourth in Italy with $1.16 million on 255 screens, which is again on par with the US, but perhaps a little weaker. Overall, it landed in sixth place with $3.22 million on 894 screens in 6 markets during its opening weekend, but should improve this weekend when it opens in Spain, Mexico, and Brazil. More...

International Details - Healthy Imagination

November 22nd, 2009

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus climbed into sixth place with $3.20 million on 764 screens in 6 markets for a total of $21.40 million after a month of release. The film opened in fifth place in France with $2.14 million on 234 screens, but that was for the full week. It cracked $10 million in Italy during its run with a total of $10.36 million, including $861,000 on 247 screens this past weekend. More...

International Details - Couples Charge Forward

November 14th, 2009

Couples Retreat expanded this past weekend but just missed the top five with $5.84 million on 1,373 screens in 18 markets for a total of $28.92 million after a month of release. The film opened in third place in Germany under the name All Inclusive, with $2.55 million on 338 screens while it also took third place in Mexico with $446,000 on 235 screens. Next up for the film is Spain next weekend and Italy the weekend after that, while it doesn't end its run until March when it opens in France. More...

International Top Five - It Is Worldwide

November 4th, 2009

There was a new number on film on the international chart this past weekend, as This Is It took top spot with $51.07 million on 8910 screens in 74 markets over the weekend for a total of $68.93 million. Individual markets were led by the U.K. where it pulled in first place with $7.96 million on 498 screens, while it also led in Germany with $6.3 million on 930 screens, France with $5.8 million on 484, Japan with $5.75 million on 321, and Australia with $3.35 million on 293. In all of these markets the film did better than it did here, given the relative sizes involved, but it was still below expectations after all of the talk about record-breaking pre-orders for tickets. Other major markets include Italy where it opened in third place with $2.16 million on 478 screens over the weekend and $3.19 million in total, while it earned second in Spain with $2.04 million on 377 screens over the weekend and $2.72 million in total. In Russia it only managed fourth place with $873,000 on 231 screens while it only managed sixth place with $325,000 on 210 screens over the weekend and $422,000 in total. More...

International Top Five - Up Hits New Heights

October 28th, 2009

Up remained in first place on the international chart with $20.19 million on 4572 screens in 26 markets for a total of $324.88 million internationally and $617.79 million worldwide. During the past week, the film reached two major milestones: $300 million internationally and $600 million worldwide. It is the fifth Pixar film to reach the former milestone and the fourth to reach the latter. Additionally, with strong holds in the U.K. ($6.21 million on 762 screens over the weekend for a total of $32.07 million after three) and Italy ($4.57 million on 624 screens over the weekend for a total of $13.84 million after two) and an upcoming opening in Japan, it has a shot at $700 million worldwide. International Top Five - Up Soars Higher

October 21st, 2009

Up had its best weekend on the international stage thanks mainly to two factors: It's first place opening in Italy, and its first place hold in the U.K. In Italy the film opened with $6.67 million on 652 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.15 million, which is a little weaker than Ice Age but better than Transformers. It held on very well well in the U.K. down just 19% to $8.40 million on 746 screens over the weekend for a total of $22.62 million after just two weeks of release. Ny this time next week it could have more than Cars made in total in that market, while it should end its run somewhere between WALL-E ($41 million) and Ratatouille ($48 million). Overall the film added $29.77 million on 4602 screens in 26 markets for a total of $295.15 million internationally and $587.96 million worldwide and has very likely that the film has reached $300 million internationally. International Top Five - Up Floats to the Top

October 14th, 2009

It took a long time, but after 20 weeks of release, Up finally took top spot on the international box office this past weekend. It earned $21.73 million on 3,616 screens in 25 markets over the weekend for a total of $257.39 million internationally and $550.03 million worldwide. Almost half of the film's weekend haul came from the U.K., where it opened in first place with $10.10 million on 411 screens. It is still going strong in Germany after pulling in $3.17 million on 846 screens over the weekend for a total of $20.22 million after four. At this pace, it should earn around $30 million in that market, and with debuts in Italy and Japan, as well as other, smaller markets, the film should have no issue reaching $600 million worldwide, while $700 million isn't out of the question. International Details - Nothing Small About Petit

October 11th, 2009

Le Petit Nicolas debuted in sixth place internationally with $9.39 million on 618 screens in 3 markets. Of that total, $8.88 million was earned on 571 screens in France, which was more than five times the amount earned by the second place film. More...

International Details - Number Six for District Nine

October 4th, 2009

District 9 climbed into sixth place with $6.19 million on 2547 screens in 35 markets for a total of $56.88 million. This includes a fifth place, $926,000 opening on 253 screens in Italy, while it added $1.94 million on 448 screens during the full week in France for a total of $6.05 million after two. More...

International Details - Viking Still Pillaging International Box Office

September 26th, 2009

Vicky the Viking fell to sixth place with 7.40 million on 898 screens in 3 markets for a total of $24.55 million. Of that, $5.92 million was earned on 751 screens in Germany and it now has $18.94 million in its native market. More...

International Details - Dusk for Ice Age

September 19th, 2009

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs fell out of the top five this past weekend earning $7.08 million on 3521 screens in 35 markets for a total of $670.44 million internationally and $865.11 million worldwide. It is now the third highest grossing film internationally of all time, while it is 18th place worldwide. That's quite a gap. The film remained in first place in Italy earning $3.14 million on 690 screens over the weekend for a total of $33.63 million after three. So far the film has earned more than 77% of its worldwide box office internationally, which is a very high percentage, and it will keep creeping higher as its international run comes to a close. More...

International Details - An Interesting Proposal

September 12th, 2009

The Proposal had massive gains this past weekend and just failed to reach the top five with $5.83 million on 2160 screens in 42 markets for a total of $124.60 million internationally and $285.57 million worldwide. It is now the biggest worldwide hit for Sandra Bullock, and it still has a chance to overtake Speed internationally. This week it debuted in third place in Italy with $1.43 million on 354 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.86 million during its opening, which is much weaker than its performance here. It has yet to open in France, which is key in its quest to overtake Speed, but even if it bombs there and in Japan, it will still hit $300 million worldwide. More...

International Details - Still a Force to be Reckoned With

September 5th, 2009

G-Force just missed the top five with $7.09 million on 2964 screens in 30 markets for a total of $67.97 million. The film had no major market openings this week, but it did add $2.17 million on 409 screens in Russia for a total of $8.93 million after two weeks there. Up next is Spain this weekend, which means it could climb back into the top five, if it performs well there. More...

International Top Five - Glourious Debut for Basterds

August 26th, 2009

Inglourious Basterds made its debut on the international market taking first place with $27.49 million on 2650 screens in 22 markets. This includes first place openings in a number of major markets, led by France where it opened with $6.09 million on 500 screens; this is not really surprising as Quentin Tarantino is extremely popular in that market. The U.K. was close behind with $5.92 million on 444 screens, while it also topped the charts in Germany ($4.20 million on 439 screens) and in Australia ($2.56 million on 266). On the other hand, the film was stuck in second place in Russia, but still performed well with $2.55 million on 340 screens. So far the film is tracking well ahead of Kill Bill - Volume 1 and should become his biggest hit of all time topping Pulp Fiction. More...

International Details - Enemies has a lot of International Friends

August 22nd, 2009

Public Enemies remained in fifth place with $8.74 million on 2919 screens in 49 markets for a total of $76.20 million. The film opened in first place in Spain with $2.44 million on 460 screens, but had to settle for fifth in South Korea with $1.22 million on 375 screens over the weekend and $1.70 million in total. With Debuts in Italy and Japan still ahead, the film should have no trouble topping $100 million internationally and $200 million worldwide. However, it was a costly film to make, so it will have to show some strength on the home market to show a profit. More...

Nine Helps '09 Strive to Become Number One

August 18th, 2009

Nine was the lucky number over the weekend as District 9 topped the charts with better than expected results. Also, nine of the ten film talked about in Thursday's column met or exceeded expectations. This helped the box office bring in $142 million overall, which was only 3% lower than last weekend. More importantly, it was 14% higher than the same weekend last year, which was much better than expected. Year-to-date, 2009 has earned $6.86 billion in total revenue, which is 6.6% higher than last year's pace. More...

International Details - Potter Hits Half a Billion

August 16th, 2009

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince became just the second film of the year to reach $500 million on the international chart, but the sixth film of that franchise to reach that milestone. Over the weekend it earned $22.85 million on 9346 screens in 63 markets for a total of $548.68 million internationally and $822.53 million worldwide after just four weeks of release. The film is running on holdovers, but it did place third in France adding $3.78 million on 918 screens over the weekend for a total of $45.08 million in that market. Meanwhile it remained in first place in Germany with $2.74 million on 908 screens giving it $54.68 million in total. Its best market overall remains the U.K. where it has made $73.85 million, including $2.25 million on 535 screens over the past weekend. More...

Weekend Estimates: District 9 Tops Predictions with Big Opening Weekend

August 16th, 2009

District 9 showed that quality is still worth something at the box office this weekend by topping most predictions to score a healthy $37 million opening, according to Sony's estimate released on Sunday morning. While that's some way behind the $54.7 million earned by G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra last weekend, it was made in almost 1,000 theaters, and at a much lower cost to the studio. Profitability for the movie seems assured. More...

Nine Aiming at Number One

August 14th, 2009

As summer slows down, the number of new releases speeds up. This week we have five films with a shot at reaching the top ten, but only three of those are opening truly wide, and only one is a saturation-level release. It's hard to say if this week is much stronger or weaker than last year, but it should be close. More...

G.I. Joe Fires Up the Box Office

August 11th, 2009

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra topped expectations and that helped 2009 finally snap its month-long slump at the box office. Overall the industry brought in $146 million, which was 17% higher than last weekend, and more importantly, 22% higher than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has brought in $6.64 billion, which is 6.6% higher than 2008's pace; however, while that's impressive, it is seriously off its highs for the year and 2009 will need to work to make sure ticket sales don't fall behind last year's pace. More...

International Details - One for the Ages

August 8th, 2009

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs became the all-time highest grossing animated film on the international scene during the past week. Over the weekend it earned $24.66 million on 8844 screens in 68 markets for a total of $551.39 million internationally, which tops the $526.88 million earned by Finding Nemo. On the other hand, that film made $866.59 million worldwide compared to this film's running tally of $733.45 million. Ice Age isn't done yet, and should reach a couple milestones before it is done. but the record is likely safe. More...

Go Joe!

August 7th, 2009

August begins with the movie industry hoping that summer will last at least one more week. There is some hope that we will have a $60 or $70 million opener this weekend, but even if G.I.Joe earns just half of that, it will be a better start than the top film from last year and hopefully that means 2009 will finally end its recent slump. More...

Funny People, Depressed Box Office

August 3rd, 2009

2009 took another hit at the box office over the weekend, bringing in just $125 million. This might seem like a huge amount, but that's 17% lower than last weekend and 18% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date 2009 has earned $6.43 billion, which is 7.0% more than the running tally from this time last year, and if 2009 can just maintain pace with 2008 for the rest of the year, then the total ticket sales will reach $10 billion for the first time ever. However, we haven't matched box office numbers in nearly a month, so things will need to turn around soon. More...

Weekend Estimates: Funny People Wins Weekend

August 2nd, 2009

On a weekend that was modest overall for the industry, Funny People took top spot on the box office chart with a $23.4 million opening weekend, according to Universal's Sunday estimate. The movie is Judd Apatow's third directorial effort, and the opening falls in the middle of his range so far, ahead of The 40-Year-Old Virgin's $21.4 million but some way behind the $30.7 million opening enjoyed by Knocked Up. It's also something of a disappointment for an Adam Sandler movie, as he has become more accustomed to $30 million plus openings. More...

Will There be a Lot of Funny Business at the Box Office?

July 30th, 2009

The final weekend in July starts today, while August starts the day after. It's not a great weekend to open a movie, and of the three wide releases, only one has any real box office potential. Even worse, this time last year there were two films that made $40 million or more at the box office, which means 2009's lead on 2008 will continue to shrink. More...

Force to be Reckoned With

July 28th, 2009

As expected, the weekend box office was soft compared to last week, as well as the same weekend last year. That said, it was not as bad as it could have been and all three new releases topped expectations. Overall, total ticket sales were $151 million over the weekend, down 5.8% from last weekend and 16% from last year. Year-to-day, 2009 still has a substantial lead over 2008 at $6.22 billion to $5.76 billion and even the lack of a The Dark Knight type hit won't be enough to close that gap. It would take an extended slump at the box office before 2009 relinquished its lead. More...

Weekend Estimates: G-Force Conquers Potter

July 26th, 2009

G-Force showed that 3-D movies are still enough of a novelty to generate good business over the weekend as the kid adventure beat Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at the top of the chart, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. The margin of victory is sufficiently small that the 1/2 spots could be reversed when final figures are announced on Monday. The Ugly Truth wasn't far behind in third place. More...

Will New Releases Force Potter Out of First Place?

July 23rd, 2009

There is almost no chance 2009 will be able to keep pace with last year, and saying 'almost no chance' is overstating 2009's chances. This time last year, The Dark Knight added $75 million to its box office, which is more than all three new releases will earn this week, combined. More...

Contest - Coming Out in Force

July 17th, 2009

This week the box office prediction contest continues the string of TV on DVD releases as its prizes, including six releases from the 1950s till today. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of G-Force, which could be a difficult film to predict. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of This American Life - Season Two on DVD, Sister, Sister - Season Two on DVD, and Hotel - Season One - DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of Cannon - Season Two - Volume One on DVD, The Lucy Show - The Official Season One on DVD, and Gunsmoke - Season Three - Volume Two on DVD. That's six TV on DVD releases, one from each of the past six decades. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2009 Preview: July

July 1st, 2009

June gave us some unexpected hits in The Proposal and The Hangover, as well as expected hits like Up, not to mention the biggest hit of the year, so far, in Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen. However, despite this, 2009 lost a bit of ground to 2008, and this will likely continue this month, as this month last year saw the release of The Dark Knight. This year we have a couple of potential $300 million hits, but nothing likely to perform on that scale. Then again, I only predicted Dark Knight would make $250 million, so we could be surprised again this year. The box office is certainly hot, and is currently running more than 12% ahead of last year's pace. More...

More...

November 22nd, 2009

The film opened in fifth place in France with $2.14 million on 234 screens, but that was for the full week. It cracked $10 million in Italy during its run with a total of $10.36 million, including $861,000 on 247 screens this past weekend. More...

More...

October 11th, 2009

Le Petit Nicolas debuted in sixth place internationally with $9.39 million on 618 screens in 3 markets. Of that total, $8.88 million was earned on 571 screens in France, which was more than five times the amount earned by the second place film.

More...
