Synopsis

Theater director Caden Cotard is mounting a new play. His life catering to suburban blue-hairs at the local regional theater in Schenectady, N.Y., is looking bleak. His wife Adele has left him to pursue her painting in Berlin, taking their young daughter Olive with her. His therapist, Madeleine Gravis, is better at plugging her best-seller than she is at counseling him. A new relationship with the alluringly candid Hazel has prematurely run aground. And a mysterious condition is systematically shutting down each of his autonomic functions, one by one. Worried about the transience of his life, he leaves his home behind. He gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in New York City, hoping to create a work of brutal honesty. He directs them in a celebration of the mundane, instructing each to live out their constructed lives in a growing mockup of the city outside. The years rapidly fold into each other, and Caden buries himself deeper into his masterpiece, but the textured tangle of real and theatrical relationships blurs the line between the world of the play and that of Caden’s own deteriorating reality.

Contest - 3D Difficult

February 20th, 2009

It's another tough week for the box office prediction contest, as our target film is Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience. There are so many contradictory signals on this film: the low theater count, the high ticket price, the short run, etc. It all comes down to the popularity of the Jonas Brothers, and how much is real and how much is marketing hype. It could make more than $30 million. Or it could make less than $10 million. Or it could make any number in-between. I really have no clue. Fortunately, there are three prizes this week, so you don't have to have a clue either in order to win, but it helps. Order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience. More...

Milk Rises to the Top of the Per Theater Chart

December 2nd, 2008

After a decided lack of limited releases that were able to expand and earn some mainstream success through most of the year, we've finally seen a number of such films that have come out recently. The latest was Milk which opened with a three-day per theater average of $40,385 while it has nearly $2 million after five days. Slumdog Millionaire again held extremely well, even taking into account the holiday, dipping just 7% to $27,470. There is little doubt it will expand greatly over the coming weeks, especially if it starts earning some Awards Season buzz. My Name is Bruce returned to the $10,000 club with $13,284 in one theater. Slumming it on the Per Theater Chart

November 19th, 2008

Slumdog Millionaire could be something we've been looking for all year, a limited release hit that will break out into mainstream theaters. It opened with just over $360,000 in 10 theaters over the weekend for an average of $36,002, and it already has $428,000 since Wednesday. Second place on the per theater chart went to the number one release of the week, Quantum of Solace, which earned an average of $19,568. The only holdover in the $10,000 club was The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, which showed remarkable strength in earning an average of $12,484 this week. That was down just 16% despite its theater count more than doubling. More...

Per Theater Chart takes one on The Chin

November 5th, 2008

We have a surprise upset on the per theater chart as My Name is Bruce came out of nowhere to win the race to the top with $16,432 in one theater. I don't know how well it will expand, and its reviews suggest it won't, but no matter what happens theatrically, it should be a big hit on the home market. Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom remained in second place with an average of $14,866 in five theaters. That was a greater than 50% drop-off, which is extremely high for a limited release and suggests limited potential to expand. Likewise, Synecdoche, New York fell harshly this past weekend but still added almost $100,000 in nine theaters for an average of $11,040. One last note, Let the Right One In expanded its theater count to seven and just missed the $10,000 mark with an average of $9,528. More...

Changeling is Feeling Lucky on the Per Theater Chart

October 28th, 2008

Changeling's weaker than expected reviews didn't hurt it at the box office, at least not its opening weekend. The film topped the per theater chart with an impressive average of $32,601 in 15 theaters. Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom placed a close second with a surprisingly strong average of $30,336 in five theaters. Synecdoche, New York also opened better than expected despite weaker than expected reviews with an average of $19,133 in nine theaters. Let the Right One In did something no horror film has been able to do in a while: survive in limited release. It opened in four theaters with nearly $50,000 for an average of $12,324. Now all it has to do is maintain this momentum as it expands. The final film in the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, High School Musical 3, which opened with an average of $11,601 in saturation release. More...
