Contest - Desperate Tales

December 12th, 2008

The number of truly wide releases is starting to get crowded with three opening next Friday. This includes The Tale of Despereaux, which we have prizes for, and therefore will be this week's target film. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of The Tale of Despereaux. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a The Tale of Despereaux prize pack, which includes poster, bookmark, Croc shoe decoration, clothing, and more. It's massive. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a T-shirt from The Longshots, as well as a Lobster Tale DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD Releases for December 2, 2008

December 2nd, 2008

It's the slowest week in more than a month, which is not surprising since it is the Tuesday after Black Friday. That doesn't mean there are no top-notch releases this week, or major sellers. In fact, there are three $100 million hits from last summer coming out this week. However, to find the DVD Pick of the Week we have to go a bit further back, all the way back to 1942 and Casablanca - The Ultimate Collector's Edition on Blu-ray. More...

Contest - Holidays Collide

November 21st, 2008

Next weekend is Thanksgiving long weekend, which can only mean one thing: It's Christmas time! Specifically, it's time for the first major Christmas movie of the year, Four Christmases. Not only is that film the first major Christmas movie of the year, it is also this week's target film. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Four Christmases. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a T-shirt and DVD from Garden Party, as well as Mitzi Gaynor - Razzle Dazzle! The Special Years on DVD Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win Mitzi Gaynor - Razzle Dazzle! The Special Years on DVD, as well as The Longshots on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! And remember, while it is a long weekend and Four Christmases starts on Wednesday, we are only interested in the three-day, Friday-to-Sunday portion of its opening weekend. More...

Summer's Stormy End

September 2nd, 2008

The Dark Knight did what few films in the past decade were able to do, lead the box office charts for four weeks in a row. Now Tropic Thunder is one weekend away from tying that mark. However, it was able to win this weekend thanks to weakness in the new releases, which caused the box office to slump. From Friday to Sunday the industry brought in $98 million, which was 8% lower than last weekend and 17% lower than the same weekend last year. Over four days, $124 million was earned, which was again 17% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2008 fell further behind $6.67 billion to $6.73 billion, but that is still less than a 1% difference and certainly not an insurmountable lead. More...

Bunnies Make Some Noise but Tropic Stays Hot

August 25th, 2008

Summer is winding down and the overall box office numbers show that quite clearly. Over the weekend, $106 million worth of tickets were sold, which is 15% lower than last weekend. On the other hand, it is a mere 1.3% lower than the same weekend last year, which continues the month-long slump. However, while 2008 is behind 2007's pace, it is by just 0.5% at $6.50 billion to $6.53 billion. More...

2008 Preview: August

August 1st, 2008

Summer usually comes screeching to a halt early in August, usually by the second weekend in August. However, this year we could have a $100 million hit opening each of the first three weeks. Or we could have no $100 million hits opening during the whole month. On the other end, there are a number of releases that probably looked good on paper, but failed to live up to their potential, not to mention a few that could not have looked good, even on paper.
