Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

10 Million People Purchase Pirate DVDs This Week

December 16th, 2006

There were a boatload of new releases to chart this week led by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest with $12.93 million, which was just a hair lower than Superman Returns's open week rentals from a week ago. This week that film placed second with a still impressive $10.71 million. More...

DVD Releases for November 21, 2006

November 21st, 2006

The official start of the Christmas shopping season is just ahead and while this week is not as busy as last in terms of quantity, the quality is still very high with several contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. Narrowing it down to the short list gives us three films, An Inconvenient Truth - Buy from Amazon, Seinfeld - Season 7 - Buy from Amazon, and Star Trek The Animated Series - The Animated Adventures of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek - Buy from Amazon. And if I was forced to pick just one, it would have to be An Inconvenient Truth - Buy from Amazon. More...

International Details - Furious' Start not quite Fast Enough

June 25th, 2006

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift started its international run last weekend but missed the top five with $7.93 million on 810 screens in 8 markets. The film took first place in five markets, including the U.K. with $3.35 million on 415 screens, in Australia with $2.28 million on 221 screens, and New Zealand with $444,000 on 53 screens. This is inline with what the original opened with in those markets, but with shorter legs due to Sequelitis it won't have as high a final box office. More...

International Details - Re-Volving Door

June 11th, 2006

The final weekend before the start of World Cup saw Volver become the latest best of the rest finishing sixth with $4.46 million on 863 screens in 5 markets for a total of $27.25 million. The film was again led by its performance in France where it grew for the second week in a row up 14% to $3.02 million on 404 screens for a total of $9.09 million while in Italy it grew by 28% to $1.44 million on 268 screens for a total of $5.61 million after three weeks. In both of those markets the film is on pace to top such worldwide blockbusters as Mission: Impossible 3, something nobody would have predicted before the start of the summer. Even more impressively, it is about a week away from France becoming the film's most lucrative market topping the $11.94 million it made in its native Spain. More...

International Details - Volver Vaults into Fourth Place

June 4th, 2006

The one major change from the studio estimates was in fourth place as the Spanish film, Volver, grew by 15% to $4.55 million on 835 screens in 5 markets for a total of $21.33 million. The big surprise came in France where the film was up a massive 41% from its opened taking in $2.64 million on 333 screens for a two-week total of $5.53 million. Meanwhile, in Italy is was down a mere 16% to $1.11 million on 309 screens for a total of $3.30 million. More...

International Top Five - Da Vinci Da Feats Da Mutants

May 31st, 2006

Despite the worldwide opening of X-Men: The Last Stand, The Da Vinci Code was able to remain on top with a relatively comfortable lead. Over the weekend it added $92.8 million on 12,038 screens in 82 markets for an international total of $320 million while its worldwide total has reached $465.25 million. The film is now 34th on the all-time international charts and 56th on the worldwide charts. As for individual markets, the results were mixed. In the U.K. is was down a hefty 48% to $9.15 million on 522 screens for a $35.38 million total but it had a better time in Germany down just 17% to $11.16 million on 887 screens for a $29.62 million two-week total. Its best holdover was Holland where it grew by 5% to $2.19 million on 143 screens for a total of $5.06 million, however, that result was aided by holidays and four of the six holdovers in the top ten saw triple-digit growth. Where does it go from here? The film has already made enough to cover its production and P&A budgets, so the only goals left involve climbing the charts. How far up the charts it reaches is still in doubt, but if I ware a betting man, I'd predict that in the end it should reach the top ten internationally and the top twenty worldwide. More...

International Details - Mission: Second Place

May 28th, 2006

Mission: Impossible 3 was knocked out of first place by The Da Vinci Code, but that was not a surprise to anyone. What was a surprise is the lack of staying power Mission: Impossible 3 has exhibited so far; this week the film fell a further 43% o $23.22 million on 6392 screens in 57 markets for a total of $164.32 million. Its best market of the weekend was the U.K. where it added $3.44 million on 445 screens to its total of $23.70 million. However, South Korea is close behind with $3.19 million on 330 screens for a total of $23.22 million. The film only as a few openings left and Japan is the only major player out there so unless a minor miracle happens Mission: Impossible 3 won't reach the heights that its predecessors did. More...

International Box Office - Da Vinci Confounds Analysts as Records Fall

May 24th, 2006

To call The Da Vinci Code's worldwide start impressive is an understatement of incredible proportions. The film pulled in a record breaking $152.45 million on 12,182 screens in 57 markets for a total of $155.00 million including previews, which tops Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith's record of $144.7 million on 10,000 screens in 114 markets. (On a side note, that latter film did earn a better per screen average by a significant margin.) The film already has $232.07 million on the worldwide scene and will enter the top 200 by the beginning of the weekend. This is even more impressive as industry tracking had it struggling to make $100 million internationally and predictions were for just over $150 million worldwide. More...

International Top Five - Impossible Holds While Poseidon Sets Sail

May 17th, 2006

Mission: Impossible 3 was again able to top the international charts this time down 42% to $40.5 million on 7,390 screens in 57 markets. It showed amazing legs in some unusual markets including Germany where it was down 19% to $2.25 million on 881 screens for a total of $5.91 million while in South Korea it was down 24% to $5.54 million on 390 screens for a total of $17.73 million. On the other hand, in France the film tumbled 53% to $2.79 million on 850 screens for a two-week total of $10.4 million. So far the film has amassed $129.2 million internationally with openings in Japan and other smaller markets yet to go. On a side note, the film looks like it will be banned in China even though several parts of the movie were filmed there. Surprisingly the film is not being banned due to TomKat overexposure but because the movie shows the Chinese police and government officials as corrupt and / or incompetent. More...

Ship Sinks while Secret Agents Swim

May 15th, 2006

It was a bad week for new releases with no newcomer able to beat expectations. Even though the holdovers held up well the overall weekend box office numbers sank. In total, theatrical releases earned $100 million, which was down 9.7% from last week and more importantly 2.7% from last year. This was the first year-to-year drop-off in eight weeks, although it was relatively small. In fact, had either Poseidon or Just My Luck matched expectations, the total box office would have seen a small growth. The small decline wasn't enough to put a dent in 2006's lead over 2005, which remains at 6%. More...

International Top Five - Impossible Start

May 10th, 2006

Mission: Impossible 3 started its international run this weekend in first place with $70.03 million on 6997 screens on 56 markets. With a per screen average just the tiniest margin over $10,000, it is no man's land between hit and miss; it made a very healthy amount of money, but still not as much as many expected. Its international debut very similar domestic opening in that way. More...

International Top Five - Five for Five

May 3rd, 2006

For the fifth week in a row, Ice Age: The Meltdown top the international charts earning a still impressive $30.01 million on 8374 screens in 57 markets for an international total of $379.61 million after a month of release. The film is starting to lose both theatres and markets and won't be able to top the charts next weekend, but it has already managed more than enough to show a very healthy profit and should reach $600 million worldwide within a couple of weeks. Its best market of the weekend was Italy where it was down a mere 4% to $5.17 million on 544 screens over the weekend and already has $15.31 million in that market. Its best market overall is Germany where the film has earned $54.00 million in four weeks, including $3.47 million on 1093 screens this past weekend. More...

R.V. Sticks it to Competition

May 1st, 2006

The last weekend in April is generally not a good time to open a new movie since the first weekend in May is the unofficial start of the Summer Blockbuster season. Movies that open now generally only get one weekend of release before being crushed by the competition. Because of this, studios tend to dump films that have lowered expectations during this weekend. So there's little surprise that the total box office was down 6.6% from last week to $102 million. But more importantly, that represents a 12.6% increase from the same weekend last year despite the fact that last year's number one film earned nearly $5 million more than this year's number one film did. This surge had helped the year-to-date figure grow to $2.603 billion, up 4.7% over last year's pace. This is significant because it puts ticket sales on the rise as well as total box office. More...

Getting a Head Start on Vacation

April 27th, 2006

It's a busy week for wide releases with four such films coming out, although none of them look like breakout hits. In fact, only one of the films is opening in significantly more than 2,000 theatres. Continuing the overriding trend of the year, the film that is earning the worst reviews of the weekend should also top the charts. More...

International Top Five - Ice Age Cracks Half a Billion

April 26th, 2006

Ice Age: The Meltdown continues its international run adding another $40.23 million on 9034 screens in 60 markets to its total of $333.06 million on the international scene and $501.41 million worldwide. The film in now 43rd on the All-Time Charts and is climbing the charts very quickly. It had a trio of openings in major markets taking first in Italy with $5.25 million on 538 screens but had to settle for second in South Korea with $1.41 million on 234 screens over the weekend and $1.55 million in total. In Japan the film was even weaker finishing in fourth place with $1.28 million on 465 screens, which is well below the $5000 per theatre average that separates the hits from the missing, so even with Golden Week holidays, Ice Age: The Meltdown won't have much legs in the market. Its best market overall was Germany where the film remained first despite a post-East drop-off of 57% falling to $5.35 million on 1109 screens for a total of $48.60 million after three weeks there. Silence is Golden

April 24th, 2006

It was a mixed week with the total box office hitting just $110 million, down 9.0% from last week. On the other hand, that was up an impressive 17.4% from the same weekend last year and year-to-date 2006 is now leading 2005 by 4%. On an interesting side note, of the three new releases, the film that earned the worst reviews earned the best box office while the film that earned the of best reviews earned the weakest box office. Further proof that high quality is detrimental to a film's box office potential. More...

Silencing the Critics

International Top Five - Meltdown Sinks Original

April 19th, 2006

Ice Age: The Meltdown added another $60.34 million on 8303 screens in 57 markets for a total of $263.19 million in internationally and $410.42 million worldwide as of Monday. This means it took less than three weeks for the film to top the original's totals on both the international and worldwide box office, and that's with three more major markets left to open in, (South Korea, Italy, and Japan). The film added a dozen markets this weekend, but most of those were smaller in nature but did include $829,000 on 45 screens in Hong Kong and $516,000 on 110 in Thailand. Holdovers include an outstanding $12.37 million on 1111 screens in Germany for a two-week total of $37.07 million there while in the U.K. it added $6.40 million on 503 screens to its total of $34.58 million in the market. It was even more impressive in Mexico given the relative size of the market, it remained in first place for the third weekend in a row with $2.54 million on 912 screens for a $24.72 million total. On the other hand, the film fell 60% during the weekend in Russia falling out of first place with $1.35 million on 397 screens for a three-week total of $15.92 million. More...

Scaring the Easter Box Office into Submission

April 17th, 2006

It was a great weekend at the box office, with the box office growing and records falling. The total box office rose 4.4% to just shy of $120 million, which was $43.7% higher than last year. In fact, the week's number one film earned nearly half of what the total box office brought in this time last year. With two weeks of incredible year-to-year growth, 2006 has pulled ahead of 2005 by 4%, but remember, this time last year was the weakest part of the entire year, so don't celebrate prematurely. If 2006 can keep the growth up even when it goes against Revenge of the Sith, that's when we celebrate. More...

Hunting for an Easter Weekend Win

International Top Five - Ice has a Weekend for the Ages

April 12th, 2006

Ice Age: The Meltdown was even more unstoppable during its second weekend of release scoring $94.7 million on 8,216 screens in 45 markets, which was one of the greatest three-day weekend on the international charts ever. It was another weekend of record openings with the film taking the number one opening for an animated film in several markets. Including in that list was Germany where the film opened with $14.16 million on 1061 screens over the weekend and $17.15 million including previews and the same can be said for its opening in Switzerland, ($2.76 million on 139 screens, $3.17 million including previews), and Denmark, ($1.27 million / $1.58 million on 92). Other huge openings include the U.K. with $17.02 million at 502 screens including previews, which was nearly 10 times its nearest competition and France with $12.5 million on 858. It also opened in first place in Australia taking in $3.87 million on 388 screens, which is not as strong as most other markets it has opened in. The best holdover for the film was Mexico where it dropped just 39% to $5.31 million on 1012 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $18.05 million. The film now has $156 million internationally and should break $300 million worldwide before the weekend. It goes without saying that both those totals are the best 2006 has had to offer so far. Box Office Suffers a Meltdown

April 10th, 2006

Only one film mentioned in Friday's preview was able to beat expectations to any real degree, and this pushed this week's box office down 19.5% from last weekend. However, at $114 million it was still 31.5% higher than last year, which is more important. Even better news, 2006 has moved ahead of 2005's pace, albeit by a narrow 1% margin, meaning ticket sales are still slower than a year ago. More...

Can Any Film Take the Lead from Ice Age?

April 7th, 2006

There's little doubt that Ice Age: The Meltdown will repeat as box office champion, the real question is how far will it fall. Also of interest, which of the new releases will come in second and how many of the four newcomers will finish in the top five? More...

Globe Warms Up to Ice Age

April 5th, 2006

Ice Age: The Meltdown was nearly as impressive during its international debut as it was domestically with a weekend haul of $47.37 million on 4605 screens in 29 markets. The film set records in a couple of markets, include Mexico with an outstanding $8.85 million on 1083 screens, which was more than 20 times more than the next highest debuting film in that market. Other record setting openings came in Argentina with $1.2 million on 134 screens, Venezuela with $531,000 on 80, Ecuador with $278,000 on 30. It also has huge openings in Russia with $7.6 million on 460 screens and in Spain with $6.47 million on 449. Probably its most impressive numbers came in the U.K. where the film brought in $4.1 million in previews alone. Look for the film to open huge there next weekend. More...

Solid as a Brick Art House

April 4th, 2006

We have a new leader on the per theatre charts as Brick opened with more than $80,000 in just 2 theatres for a per theatre average of $41,787. This bodes very well for this Friday's planned expansion and the film is nearly guaranteed some measure of mainstream success. That can't be said for the second place movie, Drawing Restraint 9; even though the film earned $18,011 in its lone theatre, it is destined to spend it time on the art house circuit by its very nature. Next up is the overall box office leader, Ice Age: The Meltdown with an average of $17,163; it will be interesting to see if it can repeat in the $10,000 club next weekend. Finally, we have Thank You for Smoking, the only holdover to top $10,000 per theatre. During its third week of release the film more than doubled it theatre count but its per theatre average remained solid at $12,749. More...

Cool as Ice

April 3rd, 2006

For the first time in a long, long time we have a bona fides hit topping the charts. Not only did Ice Age: The Meltdown beat almost all expectations, but it single-handedly brought the 2006 box office out of its slump. The overall box office was $142 million, nearly half of which came from that one movie. This represents a 29.7% increase from last weekend and a 34% increase from last year. Year-to-date, 2006 is still behind 2005, but the deficit was cut in half to just 1%. More...

Is the Box Office entering an Ice Age?

March 31st, 2006

We have the first event movie of the year coming out this weekend. Yes, I realize I said that when V for Vendetta came out, but this time I mean it. In all seriousness, if Ice Age: The Meltdown doesn't have the best opening of the year, then the 2006 box office is pretty much sunk. More...

Movie Website Updates for March 24 - March 30

March 30th, 2006

Another week with less sites than I would have liked. (On a side note, it seems every time something weird happens it happens on a Thursday. This shorter list doesn't mean there isn't an award-worthy site and the best of the best is Over the Hedge - Official Site. More...

Contest - Box Office Prediction - King-Sized Contest

March 27th, 2006

With the first event movie of the year opening this Friday, we're having a massive, triple-sized contest featuring three prizes! Winners will be selected for three predictions, each associated with a different movie opening this weekend.

The rules are the same: whoever comes closest to predicting each film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win the prize pack associated with that movie. The prizes are a King Kong Prize Pack (T-shirt, Hat and DVD), ATL Prize Pack (Poster, Baseball Jersey, and Tank Top), and Drawing Restraint 9 Prize Pack (Signed Poster and the Soundtrack). To win the ATL prize pack you must predict ATL's opening box office. To win the Drawing Restraint 9 Prize Pack you must predict Drawing Restraint 9's opening box office. All of which makes sense.

However, to win the King Kong Prize Pack, you must predict the opening weekend for Ice Age: The Meltdown. Entries must be received by 10am, Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

Good Night for Violence

March 25th, 2006

A History of Violence took top spot on the rental charts with $8.91 million in combined rentals during its first week of release. 2006 Preview: March

March 1st, 2006

This is a not as busy a month as it initially looks. Granted, there are 18 movies on this month's list, but there are five weekends, or at least five Fridays. Also, every week there's at least one film that may or may not be getting a truly wide release. Considering the level of competition, I'm leaning against any of five such films opening in more than 2000 theatres. On the plus side, we should see the first $100 million movie of 2006 open this month, and perhaps even see two movies reach that milestone. More...

Movie Website Updates for December 9 - December 15

December 15th, 2005

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. We've hit another slow patch for movie websites, which is not unexpected since the most of the new site on this list are for films that open months from now so there's hardly any content, or open during the dead zone that is January. I would say the best of the rest would be King Kong - Official Site, but it is not strong enough to win the Weekly Website Award. More...

This is on par with Wolverine sales late in September. More...

More...

More...

More...
